Question Automatic spoiler on a 72 911T

I have a 72 911 that I bought to just have fun with. I find myself doings, adding things and just plain changing it for the fun of it. The latest has me stumped a bit. I bought a deck lid complete with the auto spoiler that I want to put on. I know it will basically bolt right on. But has any one ever added this to their car and wired for manual operation. I'm not sure how to tackle this one because of the limit switches.

My plan is to have a switch on the dash somewhere to manually raise/lower the spoiler. I was also going to transfer the lettering and what-have-you so that the deck lid would still have the look of the the original except that I would have the spoiler instead of just a grill.

Any advice or guidance would be appreciated.

Tom, Go to Jack Olsens web page and see his. Really nice car. Check the trailer hitch thread (from today) and look for his post.

Thanks.

It's pretty straightforward. All the lids are the same size up until the 964. The 993 and 996 lids are different.

The three hurdles are:

1) AC. You can't have an under-the-lid condenser anymore. I switched to a 964 condenser in the rear driver's side fender.

2) Hinges. You need to get the set that came with the 964, and modify them. They were set 1 inch further apart on the 964 to make room for the retracting spoiler. Some people bend them. I had mine cut and rewelded with the mounting part moved to the outside of the pipe. This link has a picture:

<a href="http://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=63514" target="_blank">http://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=63514</a>

3) The wiring. It may be possible to have the lid be triggered by a C2 computer (if you've swapped in a 3.6, like I have), but I've never had someone show me how. I use a power window switch, and an aftermarket load sensing circuit that allows power windows to be 'one-touch.' I've got a wiring diagram to make these components work. You flick a switch to raise, and flick it in the other direction to lower. Here's a discussion:

<a href="http://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=63043" target="_blank">http://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=63043</a>

Costs? I paid $250 for the lid. $200 to get it painted. $15 for window switch and $35 for one-touch thingy.

Raising the lid menacingly at a stoplight when you're about to spank some kid in a mid-80s Mustang? Priceless.

First off, Jack the car is amazing. I'm always impressed to see someone who has really taken the time to do something right and add their own (tasteful) touches along the way.

Second, [quote] Raising the lid menacingly at a stoplight when you're about to spank some kid in a mid-80s Mustang? Priceless. <hr></blockquote>

The funniest thing I've read all day.

Wink

Well guys so now you part of the reason why I want to do this (the menacing part) the rest is just for looks.

My compliments to Jack and his awesome looking car and my thanks for the hand drawn schematics for completing this aspect of the project. It makes sense and I like the idea of adding lights to indicate when it's up or down. I already ordered the relays and the led's. And now I know I will need a solution about the hinges. I think I would rather find the correct ones than to cut and weld. Thanks again for sharing that's what makes forums like this and the people on it special. <img src="graemlins/burnout.gif" border="0" alt="[burnout]" />

Cool

I still remember clearly WHEN did I decide I just NEEDED one of the retractable wings.., It was that day when a newer porsche and mine were "having fun" in between traffic lights, and arriving behind it in one of the red lights, I saw the wing getting into the lid...

THEN I knew I just had to had it!
