Default Differences between '87-'89

Hey all - I am really enjoying your board.
I am actively looking for a 87-89 911 coupe to start autocrossing!

I wantd to verify a rumour - A friend says Porsche went through some management changes after '87 which resulted in using cheaper parts, for example, Airbox plastic is noticably thinner. The 1987 was, in his opinion, the last of the old school Porsches. Is there any truth to this story?
Thanks a bunch.

He's misinformed. The 87-89 3.2s are essentially the same car with the only siginficant difference (imo) being the clutch fork update that appeared late in the '88 MY as I recall. Select a good example from any of those three years and you'll be happy

PS: Welcome to the board! I would recommend using this place (and Pelican) extensively in your search to find the 'right' car...if you're not familiar with what PPI means, then begin your research

Yup. They also made the 15" Fuchs standard in 88 & 16" Fuchs standard in 89.

And welcome.

For what it's worth - a majority of the 89's that I found were heavily optioned. Porsche was introducing the 964 in 1989 with the C4 - so seemed to load up all the US cars with more (and heavier) optional equipment. I was looking for less and lighter - and found that more in the 1987 to 1988 cars.

I've collected a few car search sites over the years too - hope you find these helpful.

I read in an old article somewhere, Changes were made in 88' to quiet the noise from the new G-50. Something about the tunnel area as I recall.

That's something that I've never heard/read before...hmm. Many folks talk about a 'typical G50 rattle', but my '88 has none of that. Anyone have any more info on this change?

Ongoing changes during production happen and they aren't always documented as model year changes. So when asked what is the best year, the latest year typically benefits from the most factory development, fixes, and ongoing changes.

I think the 89 was the first year of the blinking led lights in the door locks as well... To me, I'd have no great prefrence of an 89 over 87. Essentially the same car, and all are over 17 years old....all comes down to condition/price.

Pete Zimmerman who posts in this forum is an expert on the various changes in these model years. If memory serves, one of the changes for '89 (along with the alarm LEDs mentioned earlier) was a change in the 5th gear assembly to reduce some noise.

FWIW - I was looking for my first P-car last year, and after doing research (including Pete's book and many online sources including this forum and Pelican) also decided to focus on '87-'89 for my search. I did end up finding a '89 that had a well-documented history and was in great condition.

The rear center reflector is different on the 89 Carrera. It's a "MUST HAVE" improvement!!!

Actually the change I believe you are referring to was in 1987- along with the G50/hyd. clutch, the headlights were changed and the rear reflector- "porsche" is in the reflector more whereas 1986 and before "porsche" was more pronounced in black letters...

I believe the black Porsche letters on the reflector was on the 87's & 88's as well.
