Need Some Advice On A 911
Hi everyone,
Would really like to know what you guys think of this car. Looking to buy my first Porsche and have always loved the early Targas. But am a little new to this.
Its a 1976 911 Targa which had a rebuilt 1984 3.2 engine installed in 2000.
Engine runs beautifully, and the PPI turned up no mechanical or rust issues.
Looking at the photos does the car look otherwise correct for a '76?
On the interior the original window cranks have been replaced with electric windows and the radio has been updated with a newer stereo, otherwise the interior appears original.
Targa roof has been given a new outer skin, as well as inner covering and new seals. Also all window and door seals have been replaced.
Would appreciate your views on the car.

It looks like a nice car. Things that pop out at me are the Carrera tail, European bumperettes, clear turn signals, aftermarket radio antenna, and H4 headlights. I would go with an antenna in the stock location. OW everthing looks good.

Thanks for the quick reply earlyapex. Must admit I was aware of the tail, but have always had a weakspot for the whales, so I didnt mind it. I am in Europe and it is a European car, so the bumperettes and the turn signals are kosher I guess.
Never even thought about the antenna, thanks for the tip, will look at getting it put back. The H4s' have a little bit of corrosion on the inside so I may have to replace them.
Got to get some Zymol HD cleanser and some Klasse wax (as UlrichD did for his car, his car looked spectacular when he finnished with it) and spend a weekend ignoring the wife and stroking the 911 to see how much shine I can get out of it.
Thanks again for the tips.

Car doesn't hasn't been given any of the following modifications which I am considering:
- turbo tie rods
- short shifter
- Weltmeister stiffening bar under the hood
Are these worth doing do you think?

I don't like short shift kits in general. The WEVO shifter is the exception. Yes, the turbo tie rods are a very good upgrade as is a front stut tower brace.

Factory only on the short shifter (if any) - Pelican has the factory unit. First, upgrade the shift tower to an '85-86 and replace the coupler bushings at the rear.
Get the Elephant brace much better than the Welt.
BUT if you buy this or any old car don't spend time and $$ on the above until you first make it safe and as good as it was when stock:
- flush/replace all fluids
- replace flexible brake hoses with new rubber ones
- replace every bushing in the suspension with new rubber (street) or the Elephant items (track) or the ther rear Wevo unit (track)
Then you can start adding 'options'...
Good Luck & search up the Long term maintenance thread on Pelican....

Zach, Welcome to European 911 ownership - are you UK? - if so I'm from hillbilly country (Wales).
In my experience, don't bother with the short shift for normal road use - I have just spent £2500 on rebuilding my gearbox which part of the problem was put down to the short shift "rushing" the box - the 915's have a long throw for a reason - they like to take their time - Weltmeister bushes are good though - since the rebuild my SC now shifts better than my Audi A3!!!
With regards to the antenna, I didn't have an aerial either and I didn't fancy drilling the wing - I used the bee sting amplifier and cable tied it up under the dash and it works perfectly!!!
Nice looking Car!!

Um, the rear flares weren't original unless it was a "Carrera" to begin with. IIRC, in 1976, the window trim should have been chromed, not black and the Targa bar stainless as well? (It it possible that by '76 black was optional, but, maybe someone else has a better memory). Do you know why the motor was changed? the '76 Carrera 3.0 l was rated at 200hp for the ROW markets.

peter morgan's book says the following:
"In 1976, the new European Carrera 3.0 could be distinguished from other models by the 'black look' introduced for the 1974 Carreras and wider flares for the rear wheels."

As for it being a '76 Carrera 3.0, I'd say it looks fine!

Thanks for all the great tips you guys.
Will take your advice Wayne and get all the fluids flushed and look into replacing the lines and gearbox bushes.
The targa bar seems to have been original black, but there is a metal beading around the bottom of the back window (where it meets the body) that was obviously originally chrome, but was at some time painted black, and the black paint there is wearing of in places.
You can't see it in the pictures because I had unscrewed the antenna (it is one of those pigtail 'corkscrew' types), but it is actually mounted on the top of the Targa bar right in the centre.
Thanks again for all the great help and quick replies.
