Rear Wheel Spacers

I have an '88 Carrera wearing 7 & 8" Fuch wheels and I was entertaining the idea of putting a small spacer behind the rear wheels to even out the track. Currently it looks as though the front wheels have a slightly wider track than the rear.
Has anyone added spacers to the rear of their car?
What size spacer is optimal, visually, and dynamically?
Will adding spacers to the rear promote greater understeer out of the car? I'd like to avoid this.
Please give me your thoughts.

Henry,
According to Wheel Enhancements (link below) you can do a 4mm (very subtle) without going to longer studs. They have 7mm as well which may be the way to go.

My 78 has the 4mm spacers in the back for the same reason.

Ulrich:
I called Wheel Enhancement and it looks like a 7mm (1/4") spacer can be employed on the rear with no problem and utilizing the stock studs. Did you notice any difference in driving dynamics with your spacer set-up? Visually, did you spacers make much of a difference?
Your car looks beautiful, by the way. Kind of makes me wish that I had bought a red one.
You have any other pictures of it, perhaps from the side?
Thanks for the response,
Henry

Henry,
I stayed with the 4mm because I thought the 7mm required new studs. Also going to 245/45 rear tires from the usual 225/50 will move the rear out a little. Also ride height has an impact - I wanted the rear tires to stay just tucket under the fender not flush or even outside it.
I doubt these changes will impact normal driving much. My track days are over so I can't tell if there is more understeer.

I just got off the phone with Wheel Enhancement. I was told by them that using a spacer (4mm or 7mm) with 9J rears is an unusual request for them because the wheels alone are wide enough to fill out the fender flares. I, too, think that the front track looks as wide or wider than the rear does.
So...Any pics of 4mm or 7mm spacers on a car with 7J front and 9J rear Fuchs? Any problems with rubbing the fenders with either spacer and 245/50 tires?

Actually, I have 8" rear wheels running 225/50/16s. I purchased the spacers from Wheel Enhancement and I was told, and can confirm, that new wheel lugs are unnecessary. The 7mm spacers still net a fairly mild result, w/ the rear wheels remaining tucked and not coming all the way out to the fender lip. The rear track does look more balanced now with the front (which are 7"s). Also there is no tire rub.
I'll try and take some pictures for you in the next couple of days.
