I was at Lime Rock this past weekend for the PCA Club Race and, for the first time, I had problems shifting from 3rd to 4th. On a couple of occasions, it would not go into 4th and when I forced it, it went into 2nd.
I have NEVER had this problem.
Also, for what was to be my last run of the event, I slowed down going into the pits and I could not get the car out of 3rd gear. Eventually I just pulled the gear shift into neutral(over a fair amount of resistance). And then I tried to put it in 1st. Once again, it was extremely difficult to do that.
After the car cooled down, everything was fine. No problems with shifting.
Any suggestions as to what is occurring?
Is the clutch disc wearing out. I did not have any slipping. Lap times were normal.
thanks

bauer: Not knowing your car or its history the only guess, and it's no more than that, that I can make is that the fluid boiled in the clutch slave cylinder. How long's it been since that part of the hydraulics has been bled, and what kind of brake fluid are you using?

If the clutch disk is the rubber centered one, that may also be part of the problem. When the rubber centered disk on my 88 Carrera started crumbling, i experienced the same type of problem. One way to check it is to turn the engine off and see if you can go through all the gears easily. if you can, then the rubber has probably crumbled. What happens is the crumbled rubber pieces are thrown outward by the inertia of the rotating mass. It gets beteen the disk and the pressure plate and flywheel and resticts the movement of the disk and makes it almost impossible to shift.
