so im driving down 95 and the car is at full running temp, then like 10 min later i look and see that the temp gauge is pegged out. i pull over and everything looks ok the top end was warm to touch like normal. i have oil in it. so is this something i should be very worried about?? i ended up driving the car another 20 min in stop and go traffic back to my work no problem. so im guessing a sensor. any advice or help??
I am pretty sure it is just a sender and a guage .. but I would assume the worst before assuming it is just a sender. That way you can limit your damage. When you go to start your car if the temp a=is back down I would suggest it is NOT a sensor. If the thermostat fails to open and you are not cooling this would happen . Next time it hapens feel the oil lines running up the sid of the car , this will tell you if the thermostat is opening . If the car is pegged and the lines are cold ... guess what.....
ok so i hopped in but the gauge had gone down. now heres the deal when it was pegged out i pulled out the dip stick and the oil was just like normal, it was hot but nothing like scolding hot. also even the engine case its self wasnt super hot to touch. i guess ill drive hoem and hope for the best.
Don't look so depressed ... the fact you spotted it is a good thing. If it doesn't happen again great ? if it does you have a few things you can check. incidentally I was looking at an oil temp guage upgrade for my sc. for under a hundred bucks you can get a new sender and a guage with actual temps on it . may be worth it if your considering a swap out anyway.
ok so i watched that gauge on the way home, once it gets above normal running temp it just flips right up to the red. time for a gauge upgrade and new sender
be careful with the ceramic part if you bend the tip out for the connector, or you might end up buying two or three of those suckers $20. Not a problem if you don't have AC
