Post 915: Shifting from 5th to 4th

I have an '84 with the 915 transmision. If I downshift from 5th to 4th quickly, with the clutch in, the gears will grind. If I pause for a second in neutral before dropping down to 4th, all is well. Otherwise, the transmision seems strong. Any ideas on the problem and how to fix it?

cmoss is propably right but if you're not willing to go that route yet, how about some heel & toe?

I do it pretty much always (with my 911 & 993 too) even though it's not necessary. At track, you pretty much need to do it.

By doing that, you can shift quicly from 5th to 4th (that's why it's done in first place, to protect syncros).

Bet you're using a synthetic, aren't you Bill? Change to Swepco 201.

Hi Bill:

I'd add the clutch must be adjusted correctly to make sure that its not dragging slightly. This is a major cause of baulky shifting.

An incorrectly adjusted shift coupler (if it was recently touched) can also do the same thing.

Bill,
Are you sure you aren't knicking reverse on the way down? I just pull it over to the left a tad more than would feel normal for any other car and banda bing 4th

I'd try adjusting you shift coupler ( under a cover, behind seats.

It's very sensitive so it will probably take a few trys before you get it the way you want it.
( I've got your same problem and am in thr middle of the process)

Procedure is on the Pelican parts website.

Could the Shift Coupler adjustment effect 1 and second? Shifting between 1 and second is not smooth unless I go slow, otherwise grinding. Is Swepco really that much better or it only effective if the synchros are slightly worn?
Thanks.
