Default Tire Pressure

Whats the recommended pressure for tires?
My front tires are 205/50ZR17 and my rear tires are 255/40ZR17.
An earlier post I did last year I recived a reply that suggested 36pounds front and rear.
But my reartires are are bigger. Can anyone clarify?

Thanks in advance.

Tmack -

In this case, size doesn't matter - 32 front, 36 rear

Mack... depends on the actual make and construction of the tire, but for most street work, somethig in the 30-36 range is fine. Generally, a lower pressure will improve ride, and a higher pressure will improve turn-in and handling a bit.

Play around and see what feels good to you.

For track work it is a whole different story...

It's worth noting that most of the pressures stated thus far are assumingly COLD pressures. That being said, generally speaking, HOT pressures around 40 psi in each tire is a good starting point. Once cooled, you can then remeasure them to ascertain your COLD pressures, then adjust a pound here and there to achieve your desired performance characteristics.

30 front, 32 rear.
I have found that going any higher in the rears, introduces uneven wear across the tire plus it's a harsher ride.

lewis: You're correct, but because this forum is more oriented toward performance, 29F/34R, or 29F/36R apply to most of the cars (set cold, of course). I personally use 30F/35R in my Euro height SC coupe. Yes, with the factory pressures used in the rear the tires will wear prematurely across the middle, but I'm OK with that. I think that when rear pressures drop into the 30/32 lb range the car gets a little sloppy.

Tmack: 17" tires like pressure, but your car is lightweight. I would start at 29F/34R (cold) and work from there. Leave the pressures alone for at least a week of driving after each adjustment, I have a hunch you're going to end up liking 30F/35R!

my 73 uses 30 f 36 rear but the 964 should be at 36 front and rear , when I tried different pressures front to rear on my 964 turbo it got really squirrely. Look in your owners manual or on the decal it shows 36 fr 36 rear.

Pete, yes I forget, this forum is more sports oriented so I agree; if at a track day then 30-32/34-36 works for me....depending on ambient temp in the morning.

Tmack please note, pressures given are ideally for track.....!!
