Here is a pic of the '81 911 Targa that I am going to look at tomorrow, I have the guy down to 5000.00. I don't think that I will get hurt if I do buy it, but worst case, I will need to rebuild the top end of the engine, which brings me to my question, are there are special tools required to rebuild the top end of a 3.0, I have found the rebuild kit from motor meister for 550.00, is this guy a pretty good source for parts? has anybody ordered from this guy before?

OK, do a search on MM on here and pelican before you do anything. I hope you know what your doing because buying a 911 on a whim that needs engine work is a real gamble. $5000? get him to go lower as he knows as well as you and I do that the motor will have to come out and apart. by the time you're done, you could have just paid to have your pick of the litter of clean SC's. But if you WANT a project........................................

You need several special tools to do a top end. You need to buy the book "How to rebuild and modify Porsche 911 engines" by Wayne Dempsey from pelican parts, its a great manual and I have read it and referanced it on a 930 motor.

A factory manual is also a must read - the only reference that I've ever used! And I mean... the FACTORY manual.

Watch e-bay, maybe talk to your local dealer (new manuals are available but Porsche is charging an absolutely ridiculous fee for them), or your local representative of Porsche Club of America. If you have a number of shops in your area you might ask them if they know someone who might be willing to part with a set.

Hey Guys, thanks for the replies, I finally made it to look at the car yesterday, and I am pretty sure it is a fuel problem, there was gas all around each injector, each cylender was also full of fuel, and it wouldn't even let the car turn over because of this, I offered him 3500.00, if he doens't take it oh well, there are plenty more out there, The body did look pretty good on the car, but they could have done a better job painting under the front lid area, it is an older paint job, but i am not worried about that, as I paint for myself and some local car lots. I am also going to check here for cars forsale too, I guess I will find something soon.

Someone kept cranking and cranking until the cylinders filled up? How is this possible without the exhaust valves dumping fuel into the headers? You are looking a a possible money pit for a car, in GREAT condition, that is worth around $12K at best. For all you know the Targa top leaks, 915/clutch issues exist, suspension problems, electrical problems, a known mediocre respray.. c'mon!

Go find a good SC in the $10K range that RUNS, have a PPI done to be sure it hasn't been twisted and all operating systems are nominal.

Roger, thanks for the reply, that is a beautiful Targa in the pic, I am trying not to find one not so far away, I am in Ohio and I don't mind to go a small distance, but Ca. is just a bit to far due to my work schedule, and I want to be able to view the car before I purchase it. Btw, how detailed of an inspection is a PPI and what do the letters actually stand for? As for the fuel filling up the cylinders, all you have to do is turn the key to the on position and it starts dumping fuel immediately, but I think that you are right about this one being a money pit. . The search is on again...

What's listed as the "911 Workshop manual 1984-1989" looks like a Bentley book and NOT the genuine workshop manuals.

Be careful of the Bentley manuals, the one I bought for my SC, though helpful, was based on a 3.2 Carerra manual and has a lot of irregularities in it, i.e. wiring colors were wrong in some instances.

Well, the 81 Targa car is now sold, German Auto Dismantlers out of Georgia bought it, but I have now found a '72 Targa 911T that is in the middle of a restoration project, Engine has been upgraded to 911S engine specs with 9000 current miles on rebuild, the body has been media blasted and all prior rust problem areas have been repaired (jack points, drivers door jamb area, drivers outside rocker panel, front suspension pan, and has been sprayed with etching primer (the correct way to do it). It also comes with new chrome rear bumper guards, all new seals and 5000.00 in new parts, asking price, is 5000.00 for the car, I am going in a few days to more than likely bring it home with me, unless I find some major problems with it.
