Default 911 Through the Decades

If you could list one 911 from each decade, which would it be?

Mine:

60's - 1967 S (love the short wheel base)
70's - 1977 3.0 Euro (anyone can have a RS or an S, besides my first 911 ride was in one of these)
80's - 1989 930
90's - 993 C2S (Turbo look, without the Turbo cost)
2000's - 996 GT3

What are all of yours?

60's - 911R
70's - 2.8RSR
80's - 959 or 3.2 Clubsport (British with the Red script and Fuchs)
90's - 993 version of GT1 (is that a 911?) If not, 993RS Clubsport
00's - 997GT3RS (supposed to come to US)

I didn't even think about the 959 or the GT1. Interesting argument, do you consider them a 911? I suppose I consider them an extenstion of the 911 family tree. Thanks for the replies everyone!

I definitely consider the 959 a 911, but I'm not so sure about the GT1. The GT1 is mid-engined and so maybe that breaks one of the identifying rules of being a 911. A 959 is built on a 911 chassis though, AFAIK, and has a 911 motor with water-cooled heads.

I agree with you 100% on both cases. The 959 is a 911.

if the Moby Dick was a 911, I guess a GT1 can be one too...
{production doors & roof molds make for a 911...}
does this mean a future production 911 can be mid-engined & still be a 911?
I imagine the product planners love the controversy, while Norbert Singer just liked winning races by winning the rules (& fooling management a bit?), combined w/ great engineering, teamwork & drivers.

Jay, it seems that there are two lists called for, 911s made for the general market & those made for competition (recall Excellence's polling of experts along those lines). Man! Porsche sure has made these matters challenging, since ALL Porsche sports / GTs were designed for both (if not all) purposes.

Leffingwell's new book, "Porsche 911 / Perfection by Design" is themed around the question, "who or what is the 911 designed for?" when he asked Ferry, the response was (more or less & don't read further if you don't want to have it spoiled...), & I paraphrase, "I designed it for me, & if others liked it too, fine..." What an excellent, coherent vision! I think that's why he was always surprised about the extent of market acceptance of his car - he wasn't really allowing sales & marketing feedback to drive his design evolution (doesn't mean he wasn't a very good businessman / industrialist, & engineering evolution was a different matter). So, that conservatism (or insensitivity to making decisions based upon demand projections or market psychology) meant the company was always in good shape, ahead of the curve, because the leader had a compelling vision & could execute. Then, of course, came the "problem" of how to take YES! for an answer - always more challenging than how to take NO! for answer (but I digress far from the topic - sorry...).

Anyway, my personal choices among US production 911s through the decades, $s no matter, is a lot like yours...
60s - '67 S
70s - '73 Carerra RS
80's - '89 Carrera (close 2nd is the '89 Turbo)
90's - '97 Turbo S (close 2nd is the '98 C2S or C4S)
00's - GT3 (any flavor will do)
cheers!

Ked, I enjoyed your post! However, I'm afraid the 73RS was never a US car...

Luis,
Thanks for taking the time to post the matching pictures with your fav. rides. It really added something to the post. I love the GT2 in Gulf Orange. Makes that car look AMAZING! I have always said if I could order a new Porsche from the factory I would get a paint to order 911 in Gulf Orange Best wishes - Jay
