Your O2 sensor should be screwed into the forward portion of your cat/bypass pipe/euro pre-muffler. It may have a stainless steel semi-circle shield around it. Otherwise, you either have a Euro engine or an engine that the prior owner deleted the O2 sensor.

What is the type number (i.e. 930/21) or serial number of your engine?

That really doesn't help; just means you have either a 1987 Type 930/20 or 930/25 engine.

If you can not find the O2 sensor on the cat, then you probably do not have one. Do you have an O2 sensor plug inside the engine compartment (left bulkhead below the fuel filter)?

i basically have an idle problem keeps fluctuating from 800 to 1200 i have checked the air flow meter/sensor, idle air control valve, throttle position switch and sensor i had to adjust this , speed sensor, cranck sensor, checked for air leaks, cleaned the throttle out but still cant sort the idle.
all the sensors were checked using resitance

I run an APE chip and a test pipe, my O2 sensor is installed on the test pipe, but it is disconnected at the wiring connector in the engine compartment. This just causes a rich running condition.

Yes, the test pipe replaces the cat.

I don't have an answer for your O2 sensor question, but among the list of things you checked regarding the idle issue, I did not see the idle switch. Sometimes they need adjusting or they can go bad, either case can result a in fluctuating ilde.

Good Luck

is the idle switch seperate to the throttle position sensor i tested the tps and on top of this was another sensor which i tested and was fine this isnt the idle switch you are referring to is it, if i pull the connector of this the idle goes uo to around 3500 revs and stays constant

The idle switch is located on the back left side of the throttle body. The connector for it is located on the right front next to the TPS connector. It sounds like you checked it.
