Newpie here. I've been lurking. Thanks for all the great info.
I purchased a 1987 911 Carrera a few months ago. . Now I know what you are talking about. Lovin' it.
I've heard that the Porsche crest bottom is supposed to face the valve stem. Does it matter where the Porsche wheel lock goes in relation to the valve stem?
Also noticed one of the wheel studs on each wheel has a red dot. Any significance?
Thanks

Red dot is the one you put the locking lug on, it should be opposite the valve stem from what I have read. I don't believe the center caps have anything to do with it but could be wrong. Also don't think it matters a bit either way..

Hold on here. I've just read the tire & tire changing section of my 1986 Carrera's owner's manual and find nothing about a location preference for the installation of the OE locking nut/sleeve combo or the significance of the red dot on one lug nut stud per hub (which my car _indeed_ has!).
Is all this urban legend or is there any real reason for them?
Just had to stir this one up as I've heard of these "requirements" before and never saw a reason for them. What gives (if any thing at all)? I'm especially interested in the real significance and the associated 'why' of the red dot which does appear to be present on most cars?

the bottom of the crest is supposed to line up with the valve stem, I have come accross the red dot before in my factory manuals, but forgot its importance but if I remember the valve stam is supposed to line up with it.....if you don't your car will lose approx 10HP at the wheels from balance and drag issues..........

LOL! fix'n got it right, if the lower point of the crest doesn't point toward the valve stem, and if you take the lug nut off the stud nearest to the valve stem and there is no red dot, there is an additional price to pay. You won't be allowed to attend PCA car shows!
