Post DE Brake Pads for '87 Carrera?

Does anyone know of a decent Brake Pad that can be used for DE events for an '87 Carrera? The previous owner of the car gave me some spare pads of which one set was track pads and they felt much better than the street ones. Might you know of a decent web site for purchasing such pads? The local PCA has both Ponocos and Watkins Glen coming up. Thank you. Dan

Dan,

Sounds like you might have missed Riesentoter's "Super Tech" session at Dougherty Automotive in Feb. Paul Weston of Weston Motor Sports gave an excellent presentation on "Getting the Most from Your Porsche Brakes". He advertises in both Pano & EXCELLENCE, and his prices seem competitive. More importantly, after 30 years of PCA track driving and instructing, he is an excellent source to match the right pads to the right car to the right driving conditions. His tele # - 888-558-0631. Look forward to seeing you at Pocono *G*

Try one of the Rennsport supporters like Imagine Auto or Rennsport Systems...I can't think of anyone better to help you. BTW, I like Pagid pads for the track.

Dan,

I like Pagid Orange pads for the track (they work fine on the street too, but can squeel in some installations). Pagid's aren't discounted. I get them from Paragon Products, a Rennlist sponsor, where they also throw in a can of ATE Super Blue (if they still have any) or TYP 200 (same thing, just gold in color).

After using several sets of Pagid Oranges, I've moved to Performance Friction 97 pads, and prefer them. They're a bit cheaper and seem to have a longer life, better bite, and better pedal feel, at least with my car (also an '87 Carrera). The jury is out on rotor life.

I like Pagid Orange. I have run performance friction, only to see my factory cross drilled 930 rotors crack after one event. I have not had the same problem with pagid.

Performance friction may stop better than pagid, but performance friction will also have you repeatedly stop at the bank to replace your rotors.

Thumbs up

Paul Weston or OG Racing for pads -- I used Pagid Orange after PF93s ate my rotors. Now I am on my third set of PF97s. You can't go wrong with either PF97s or Pagid Orange though.

I've heard good things about Portfield R-4s Carbob Kevlar performance pads on another Board. I ordered a set not yet insatlled (this week). Users say they are kind to rotors, very little dust, long lasting, very good bite and fine for street use. I'll see what ahppens.

I am using Pagid Blue. It is more friendly in terms of dust, noise and cold stopping than Orange but is certainly fine for DE. In the UK a lot of the classic 911 race cars use the Blue compound. The stoping power is not quite as good as Orange but I can still lock my wheels up so why pay more? I've done 3 DEs this summer with very little wear and no brake fade issues.

Last set before the Pagids were Porterfield R-4s. They are also a good compromise. Similar in dust and noise to Pagid Blue but less cold stopping power. You could really feel the difference as they warm up, like in a gentle stop from say 100mph, after a couple of seconds of light pedal pressure the retardation just quietly increased with no change in pedal pressure.

If you are just doing a couple of DEs you might not need a set of race pads like Pagid Orange or PF97. Just my $0.02.
