Polishing is a nice alternative. I was concerned about heat and degredation of paint surface over time so I chose polished instead.

If you powdercoat, be aware that the coating is thicker than paint, and can cause an interference with the shroud. When I had mine apart earlier this summer for the alternator replacement, I painted the shroud black & the fan anthracite. Fan stayed ok, shroud paint got beat up a little on the re-install.

When I've done polishing on other cars I've had, they've run hotter, FWIW.

Paint = quick & easy, inexpensive
Coating = durable, longer turnaround, possible interferences
anodizing = beautiful, not as durable as coating

Al Reed in Anaheim can make it look spectacular. He can either powdercoat it to your specs, or just polish and clear-coat it. He does incredible work. You should have the fan housing done, too, if you have it off the car.

The down side of powder coating is that the leading edges of the blades will eventually be sandblasted and chip. It is impossible to touch up powder coating and make it look right. I suggest anodizing or paint. CLearcoat after polish is probably the easiest to keep looking good.

Default Fan restoration

Spray paint then eggshell lacquer - not too thick or the fan will touch the housing.

Mine has some kind of yellowy clear cote that I can scrape off with my fingernail,in fact it is over most components on my engine. What kind of prep should I do before painting? Also are you talking about regular spray can paint or going to a body shop and getting "2K" paint ( this is body shop paint like when you get your car done, a lot more robust ) I have an air compressor and would consider trying it myself with the right advice. I'd post a picture of mine but I'm too embarassed, it looks horrible. !

What i did was to first powerblast with Aircraft Aluminum Oxide 180 then clean to original finnish. I elected not to paint as i felt this would in time flake off. I would agree with Polishing as stated by "DB_NC_83SC" Important note the fan and housing is made of Zinc so be wise on the choice you make, this is why i keep it original. I will post the end results.
