Default Whale Tail add-on to standard 911??

Hello, I'm in the market for a porsche 911, I really like the turbo style (with the whale tail). However, if I were to get a standard 911 (non turbo) are there kits out there to add the turbo style rear end?

Thanks!

Aach the 911 Noob. (waiting for my 'Used porsche 911 story' book to come in the mail.)

There is the Turbo tail and the Carrera tail. I think the Carrera tail looks better on a non widebody car. The true Turbo tail, aka tea tray, looks a little out of place on a narrow bodied car, IMHO.
They are relatively easy to add but you'll probably want to add an addtional shock. My '88 has the factory tail with the additional shocks and it a lot better for holding up the lid.

don't think I have seen many SC's without the tail ( either carrera or turbo ) . It wasn't until after I bought my car I realized they weren't even on early SC,s until 82 I think but someone can correct me if I'm wrong. A lot of tails were added and I think really "finish " the look of the car. ( no insult intended to the purists ! ) . Mine is a 78 with a carrera tail added, but yep ! you sure need that extra shock !!

Add the front air dam at the same time to mainatin the car's balance at speed.
Not good to add one, and not the other. Do a search on on the topic, as this has been discussed in detail frequently.

Rear spoilers (tails, etc.): It all started with the ducktail on the '73 RS, and then the '74 USA Carrera. The '75 USA Carrera received the first whale tail in the US, and the 3.0 Turbos of '76/77 got a tail very similar to the '75, but with an additional air grille. The tea tray, with its massive rubber surround, appeared on the '78 Turbo and remained for many years, while the 1980 Special Edition Weissach SC got a whale tail of its very own. I think that whale tails became an SC option about 1981, but they were never standard equipment on the narrow bodied cars (other than those mentioned), which would have forced an option stated as "rear spoiler delete," or something similar, of which there is no such thing. Of course, we can't forget about Porsche's "Special Wish" program that would make just about anything possible.

A tip from a guy with four tails: do not chop up your existing decklid to add a tail. Buy a used decklid ($50), or buy a lid and tail together. You're going to have to do some painting anyway, and it's not worth the $50 to give up your ability to return to the stock look.
