Default Front door speakers 911

Hi Guys I am just freshening up the car and thought i would replace my 25 year old speakers in the front door. I am not a boom boxing teenager ( sorry if I just offended anyone ) I just wanted to replace the existing speakers with some ones that do not disintegrate in my hands. I see of course they are 8 ohms compared to the standard 4 ohms. Anyone have any suggestions ? PS i have the original head unit ( am fm cassette, and I don't plan on replacing it any time soon as it actually has the "look" of a 78 porsche, which is what I want .

Thanks for any info guys

When I got my 84, I replaced the original(?) speakers with Infinity Kappas. The fronts were 5 1/4" on mine from memory, the rears were 4" on the sides (Cab). I opened the holes in the side panels in the rear & put in 6 1/2" (?) Kappas out back. I also replaced the Blau CD deck that was in there with a Nakamichi CD400 deck, in large part due to its classic, sleek face style (no swimming dolphin graphics here, thank you). The speakers really woke up after replacing the deck. If you feel like playing with it, but leaving the orig. deck alone, I know a lot of guys who put receivers under seats, in the glove box, etc, & use a wireless remote for most functions, FWIW (other cars, not necessarily p-cars).

Another nice thing about the Nakamichi is the sub controls built into the deck (my new SHO's Alpine unit has it also). I stuffed a Clarion SRV303 powered sub under the pass. front seat, running off the deck controls.

Good luck!

WOW FRED That's some serious upgrading !!

You are right my fronts are 5 1/4 . I have a targa so my rears I think Are a little larger. I will check out the deck you speak of as the Future shop units are just to disco for me . Are the infinity KAPPAS you speak of a 8 ohm speaker ?

Hi Iceman,

Don't be too concerned with impedence; either 4 or 8 ohms will be fine, though most car audio is 4 ohms IIRC. If you're planning on keeping the original head unit (which is "limited" in it's capabilities because of its age), no need to spend on high-end speakers. Simply go to any Best Buy-type store, listen to all the 6.5" spkrs, and buy the ones that fit your budget and sound best to you. Installation is a breeze and you'll enjoy the improvement immediately.

That is just the advice I was looking for . limited you say ? I call my existing head unit total CRAP ! .. am I allowed to say that ? the tape player runs everything at half speed and every radio channel has static. Anyone know how to fix this ?
At least with a new head unit I may be able to get rid of that RF box behind the passanger footwell. What an antiquated piece of Junk. looks like the germans used it as a sipher in WW2 or something !

I don't believe the Blau I had was the original deck (they didn't have CD's in 84, did they), but I did keep it, since it was a bit more "correct" than the Japanese deck.

If you want it, lemme know and we'll work something out shipping-wise. It played CDs at normal speed IIRC.

eBay was where I got the speakers; the deck was either eBay or Amazon (but the deck prices have gone up for Nak stuff lately). I did see a nice MB-VI six-disc in-dash changer online this morning, but it's out of my current budget.

LOL!!!

Look, I was trying to be nice ...didn't want to say myself that it was a piece of crap.
Find yourself a nice headunit with some built-in wattage: it's the simplest solution (no amp and myriad of wiring to deal with), and you'll thank yourself at every drive.

I just upgraded the audio system last week in my '87 Carrera--Apline MP3 CD Receiver and Boston Acoustics S55 5-1/4" in the front doors and S75 4x6" for the rear deck. I am very happy with the results.

Clarion SRV303 self-powered sub. RCA's right into a deck that has sub-out.

eBay auction 5803009942, for example only. The prices have dropped too - I paid around $200 for mine, they're $150 range shipped now. Slides right under my manual pass. seat. Wish I could put a 2nd one under the driver's seat with the cab though, especially with the Fabspeed Bypass/Bypass setup.
