Default 82 SC Airbox Replacement.

OK, Now that I've found this GREAT resource, I hope I don't drive you guys nuts.

Has anybody tried to remove the airbox / fuel injection as a complete unit with the engine in the car? It almost looks like it could be done if you take the fan and AC pump and all the other little pieces off. Then pull the intake runners off at the heads and lift it out as one piece. I want to replace the rubber boots on the runners and check the box for splits and would wrather not drop the engine.

Also any thoughts on 78 - 79 runners inplace of the 82's?

Thanks in advance.

There's an article on tech.rennlist.com on CIS airbox replacement, which may answer some questions. It can be read here.

On a related subject: I just recently bought an airbox and am not sure what years it is for. I can't find a part number on it anywhere. It was listed as a '78 and is similar ro mine but is there some way to be sure?

Well I can't tell you where to find the number but thanks to Bill I can tell you what the numbers are when you do find them on the airbox.

(74-77, 80-83) 911.110.904.00
(78-79) 911.110.106.20

Hope that helps. Let me know where and if you find the numbers.

I'd just take the engine out of the car, if it were my car.

It's really not a lot of work to get the engine out (few hours). You can take the time to really clean up the engine compartment, do a valve adjust (much easier with engine out of car), replace all the accessible seals and lines, clean up the engine, etc.

I've taken off and removed the CIS system from 911s, but with the engine out of the car. Even with the engine out, there's some tight fits.

As the Rennlist article says, it could be done with a partial. But I think, all things considered, a complete drop isn't that much more work - overall. And you end up getting more things done and freshened up.

reseal the breather, thermostat, and oil pressure switch while the motor/airbox is off, trust me on this one. as above mentioned, yank it, detail it and do some otherwise pesky stuff while you are in there

Thanks guys. I think I'm starting to lean towards the complete drop. I really would like to detail and clean every thing and have some leaks to attend to.
I figure I'll just drop it, do a trans freshening, light weight flywheel, and clutch along with the engine stuff. I picked up Simple Green and Easy Off over the weekend so I'm set for a good detailing.
Thanks again for all the help and advice.
Doug
