3.2 throttle sticks @ 2000rpm
My 3.2 throttle started sticking at 2000rpm when the engine
gets up to temp. There is a microswitch that seems to control
this attached to the left of the throttlebody. Can this be adjusted ?
I have tried adjusting the linkage behind the gas pedal but that
did not help. Any suggestions ?
Thanks

if you tested the idle pos switch with a meter and it's good, I'd look at the spring return action before I messed with linkage underneath and on top. Soapy water and a tooth brush?

There is a WOT switch on the TB, but I doubt it it could cause sticky throttle. The cruise control cable has a plastic adjuster suspended in a metal bracket just upstream of the TB. If there is slack in the cable (or if the plastic adjuster is not firmly seated in the bracket) it can slip in and/or out causing the throttle to to stick in a fixed position. Usually a quick stab on the gas pedal will cause and/or resolve this issue.
Adjust the cruise cable to tighten and/or pinch the bracket to better grasp the adjuster if this is the source of your problem.

It is not the WOT switch.... this is a microswitch that rests under the arm that is connected
to the linkage that is moved by the gas pedal and also attached to the cruise control.
The WOT switch is on the other side of the throttlebody from this microswitch.

the two prong connector above the full throttle switch (three prong) is the idle position switch. Which controls the microswitch under the lever on the left side, that you're talking about. Do you have the bentley carrera book?

NO Bentley Manual or any other kind of manual.... I have only had my Carrera for about 4 weeks.
I installed the AJUSA aluminum pedals last weekend and the problem came up then. Is there a
way to adjust the switch ? It looks like there is an adjustment screw right under the switch.
Thanks,
BTW.. Jerry
I have a 89 Silver Anniversary, looks alot like yours ! except your rims are MUCH nicer !

Update....
Thanks for all the help guys. The info that Jerry sent did the trick !!!
I made a very slight adjustment to the throttle position switch and a minor
adkustment to the cruise control cable and all is right with the world and
my idle !
This is why I am a Rennlist member, the info I got was well worth the membership
cost not to mention the comraderie with fellow members and others who
advise and support us here. It is a great feeling to resolve a problem that
has been ongoing for a week or two in just a couple of minutes.
Thanks again Jerry and the rest of the Rennlisters who posted.

My 1984 Carrera was idling at 2000 rpm once it got to normal operating temperature. This post helped me figure out the problem was with a bend in the cruise control cable (I never use cruise). Once I straightened it out the problem went away. Thanks for these posts!

thanks for the information re the bracket holding the cruse control cable. fitting was loose on my 1985 carrera and would hang up sometimes causing stuck throttle at about 2500 rpm. The search function really is great.

The cruise control cable has a plastic retainer and bolt that you can use for adjustment. As they age (and get hot) they tend to get brittle and break.
I have had one car with the throttle stick open at the track and I have instructed in a 3.2 that had similar situation (but stayed at 2500 rpms instead of 5900 rpms) Both made for an interesting day.
I recommend zip tying the cruise control cable to the bracket so it can't come lose and hold the throttle open.

The zip tying worked perfectly for me. Not only did it cure the stuck throttle problem, but it brought back the throttle response that had eroded over time without my realizing it. For example, it had become difficult to blip the throttle for downshifts because of the loose linkage. I am overjoyed with the renewed feel--and it cost less than a penney!
