performance chips
I'm thinking about installing a performance chip. Any input as to choices and results? I'm aware of the Automotion chip, but I saw a chip by Steve Wong @ the Pelican site and I'd like to go with something that guys have had a good experience with. I'm not looking to be the fastest guy on the road....but I really need to make my son realize that his damn Subaru WRX ( not the STI model... but still quick) is SUPPOSED to eat my dust and not be next to me !! Thanks

I think he is trying to say that his car is not blowing the doors off of his son's WRX and he wants more power.
1st do a search on this subject on the pelican site, there is a ton of material to read, enough to make you go blind. Lots and lots of peoples opinions.
I have the Autothority chip in my car (the PO had it installed) and I will be switching over to the Steve Wong chip here shortly. W/my chip my power doesn't really hit til about 4500 rpm's and I have yet to hit the rev limiter w/that chip and I have had it to 7k a couple of times. And that alone makes me nervous. I really can't compare to a stock chip since I never had one in my car (so I couldn't tell you a before and after comparison) but it does definitely have some get up and go @ 4500 rpm's, but I hear that the SW chip has the power more evenly through the RPM's

thank you Phil....that was exactly what i meant. My ride is an '88 carrera coupe, 3.2 stock, except for a Dansk sport muffler. So it appears that Wong is the preferred chip. Appreciate the info guys. Steve

Steve Wong is the 911 chip guru. I will need a custom chip as I have alot of special stuff going in and on my 3.2
As far as the WRX, they are fast out of the hole, but thats about it, they will fold up a gearbox as easily as a paper bag, have no torque and suffer from heat soak pretty quick so challenge him to a race to 140MPH or up a canyon. However, the WRX, with a few mods they can have 350HP and AWD so you have to give credit where it is due and watch what tree you bark up.

I have a SW chip in my '86. Car runs like a champ. A chip is not going to catch the WRX, it has more HP. Try a 930 if you want to go faster otherwise, put the SW chip in and get that WRX on the track with you. The results will probably be better and the WRX will be chasing you instead.

straight line - the wrx will hang - get him in the twisties and he will see your tail lights. and i'll 4th or 5th the Steve Wong chip - nice guy - great chip - will increase your middle range immensly.

I do not know about the steve WOng chips but from the posts above they seem ot be pritty good. My dad has an 86 carrera and has an autothority chip in it and it seems pritty fast. He used to have the Cat off as well wich will add some HP as well but had to put it back on when inspection time came.

Thanks Bruce, that was all the push I needed for my 84. I've been talking with Steve about converting the DME to 8k & going with the appropriate chip of his, vs. 4k only conversion.
I assume driveability is improved?
sman911 - there is ALWAYS someone faster, and sometimes it's a sedan, truck, motorcycle, whatever. If you judge your 911 happiness by who's beaten you, you'll be disappointed with your ride eventually. I've had faster cars than my 84 Cab (some MUCH faster), but none that's made me happier. When I drive down the road now, I'm in the zone - it's not about the other guy.
FYI, I have a Weltmeister chip for my 84 which has increased power & midrange some, but at the possible expense of some driveability. For numbers though, it was a positive thing.
