Default 1996 993TT (550HP)

I will write more or answer questions regarding my 1996 TT at a later time if need be.

The purpose today is to praise and thank Felix at Gulf Performance in Florida for my new engine.

How I found him? Luck. pure Luck. A friend of mine is Dayton at DePartStop in California. Many of you know him for great parts, prices and service.
Thank you Dayton.

Below is a list of modifications and work done to motor:
Bow Tailed Block (Blue Printing)
Crowder Rods
Shick Cams (2.2 Lift)
3.8 Litre
Niro Ringed Heads
German Rac Tech KKK Turbos
Enlarged Intercooler
Performance Clutch Package
Complete Transmission Rebuild

Other cools things:
19"RUF Wheels
F40 Brembos (I think) They are 15" or 16"
Race Seats
Full Leather

What its like:
First let me say that the sound is something you have to hear to believe. But let me explain as best I can. You turn the key and you don't here that sound when on the gas of a normal 993. The wine...

It sounds beefy and lumpy like a six cylinder v8 from Germany. I took the car to Willow for a track day to see a friend and (at the track) with one 996 TT and two 996 GT3. When I came onto the front stretch to park, everybody and I mean everybody was looking. I can hear the car from inside my house parked in the street at 1K idle. Yet I can still have a conversation. Its weird, its like the sound travels but not inside the car. Stand outside and you feel it idle thru the pavement. Get in and I can listen to classical music. Very strange, but Felix said it was awsome.

Best explanaition I can say is this. When YOU read about the RUF cars or other tuners in the magazines. I know becasue I was one of them. You wonder what they are talking about (Sound/Speed). Well now I know. What makes the difference. The cams, 3.8. Maybe its everything. But one thing is for sure. It sounds like a very well kept, very different and VERY powerful 911.

What it's like to drive:
I guess my first drive is the best explanation I can give because now I am used to it and can actually get the rear to step out in corners, so here it goes. Now remembering that I use to own a 450HP 300 ZX and a 300 HP1998 993S.

I was ready.
(And I almost forgot that I race 600GXR out at Streets of Willow, So quick speed is something I am used to)

Also, remembering four years ago I went according to the OD 195mph on the 101 in Los Angeles with the old owner. I was ready...?

NOT EVEN CLOSE. I got on the free way and called Felix on his voice mail so he could hear me for the first drive. I got the car into second gear and then rested at 3rd (4000rpm) and said "i am going to punch it". So I did...

and then, IT SUCKED ME BACK INTO THE SEAT SO HARD, and I was going so fast by the time I shifted into 4th gear I had let out of the throttle by 5000 or so into 4th. I have yet to pull to 6500 into 4th gear and carry the boost into 5th.

And if that is not enough, every single person who I have given a ride to at this point either screams or says NOTHING. My next door neighbor said that he had driven in nascar before and that this Porsche felt just like it. Its funny, you can actually see there legs tense. My wife? she wont go in the car unless I promise to stay out of boost.

Becasue of the Turbos he chose and the cams and the 3.8 it pulls all the way thru. It has NO Lag if driven properly and I can drive the car safely and you would not even no it has 550hp or so. My Mom could drive this car.

After all, at this point (from me) in my phone message with Felix was silence and a thank you.

Dealing with Gulf Performance:
Awsome experience to say the least. Patty is great and so is Lisa. Just know that if you are doing a big build. Dont expect to get answers from them. They work up front and try to stay away form the tech side. As for Felix. I would honestly say that in the United States, he has to be one of the most knowledgable porsche mechanics (Owners) I have ever dealt with. You hear about great Tuners in all the mags, but never Gulf Performance. Like Felix always told me thru the build. "I don't build bombs!, I build cars that you can drive daily and then on Saturday, take to the track".

He really deserves his day in the spotlight. But , his prices are fair and he doesn't do the political thing, so maybe thats why he does not get the coverage.

Stay tuned because in March or early May I will be racing to the best of my driving ability a Carrera GT (Straight Line) to see how fast my car really is. I promised Felix I would try to stay in it through 5th. We will see...

In closing- Thank you Felix. My favorite dream car used to be a Lamborghini Diablo. I know longer have an itch to EVER own another car. I honestly believe I own the finest production car ever built.

I can be reached at tpsinfo@pacbell.net

WOW that car sounds amazing!!! My favorite porsche is the 993TT snd it deemd you have taken it to the next level!!!!! I cannot imagine what it must be like to drive that car.

On another note I am in LA for college and as a car nut was told to check out the Peterson Museum. I wonder if they will ever do some kind of Porsche exibate. The place was cool and the muscle cars were awsome but would love to see that. Do u know if they ever have done a porsche thing.

There's an early 901 that's part of their permanent collection.

>>>The purpose today is to praise and thank Felix at Gulf Performance in Florida for my new engine.<<<

So... What's the point of your post? To thank your mechanic in public in hopes he garners some additional business?

I guess we all should call in because he's the new 993TT man on the block?

550HP on a 993TT is not unusual (actually... it's fairly trivial to obtain 550Hp on a 993TT). Basic bolt-ons do the job quite easily. Call me when you hit 650RWHP :-) Below that... it's old news.

Why don't you post your dyno charts. Let's see how well your mechanic has chosen his components.

The point of his post was to thank his engine builder/mechanic. Whats wrong with that? In this day and age of people posting all kinds of horror stories about their wrench ripping them off, I find it refreshing to hear of someone posting an actual success story. Dont you?

Default Tony, Tony

and thank you to Chris. Yes the purpose was to thank Felix and Let everyone on the Rennlist Know about a good honest guy who really knows porsche. maybe you are bitter because you cannot post posotive things on the net about your mechanics. But I understand. Oh and by the way, its looks like you go to the track. Why dont you come out to Willow Springs and let Felixe's build tell the whole story. Oh, lastly. 600+ to the rear wheel. You mean one that starts everyday. One I can depend on for the next 100K miles. Oh, thats right your talking the best production car built maid better through 25 years of experience (Felix).

The bolt-on stuff. Wow, funny, when I sent the motor it was in a million parts down to every last washer. Its not like I sent a car with a motor. I sent half the motor one day. Then I sent the other half with a transmission. Then I sent the car two weeks later.

You (tonyg) must be one of those guys who gettes totally ripped by Andial. The owner did look at this motor when it was in the back of my truck when i drove it down to see him. And after the bait and switch I go over the telephone He sisid "we do it my way or no way, by the way thats 50K twin plug". Every dealing with them has been a nightmare and very un-friendly. Is that the post you want. I am new to this board, but I will let this one (tonyg) go.

I hope my response is well desrved.

Yes I go to WSIR. In fact, we rent the track out at least 3 days per month for private track sessions (not including the Kart track private rentals). And I typically get at least one weekend per month in with a local club.

Oh.. BTW.. I don't take my cars to a mechanic. Unlike you... I either do the work myself, or I have the work done at my shop. And, no I don't promote the shop online. I don't need to.

I'm not one of those guys ripped by Andial. Far from it. Check your facts before you post.

I'll tell you what. You (and/or Felix) show up at one of my private track days at WSIR. I'll comp you both. I'll show up with one of my street legal cars (plus there will be probably about 10-15 of my customer's cars there as well all in the same state of tune)... all full interior, full weight, full steel cars. These are everyday drivers. They start, idle, and have everyday drivability exactly as good as stock car.

I'm not saying this to be mean. It's just that 550Hp really isn't special on a 993TT (and it's even worse on one of our 996TT's). It's very easy to do. Done it many many times.

The thing is... we don't do those cars anymore. For the last few years, it's been 99% 996TT's in all flavors which are are much faster, much more advanced car. At our shop, 993TT's are, for the lack of a better term, old school. Great cars, but no camparision for a 996TT in the same state of tune.

So if you're up for it. shoot me your and Felixs' email address. I'll get you both on the list for our next track day this month.

There's nothing better than someone putting their money where their mouth is :-)

Did you seen me mention our shop name anywhere? (on this thread or any other thread on Rennlist)

Like I said earlier... I'd be more than happy to give him and his mechanic a free full track day at Willow Springs to show me exactly how incorrect I am.

Why are you arguing with this guy, he posted a freindly thread then you hi-jacked it with your put downs about his reasons for posting (like it has to be justified to you?) and put downs about his car because its not as up-to-date as the machines you prefer to work on.

You ask what is the point of the original post, I ask what is the point in your reply? as far as I can see you posted to cause an argument........................well done buddy.

It's not his car I have a problem witih. Nor do I have a problem with him.

I do have a problem with the promotion of his shop on this board in the manner in which it was posted. ...Get some work done somewhere... and the shop that did the work is the end-all of performance shops.

The fact is that his car is is a "built 3.8L" 993TT and putting down what it makes (although it's certainly excellent power) at 550Hp doesn't really seem too outstanding in light of the "company" his car keeps (modified 993TT's and 996TT's).

Given the list of mods, I'm sure a small fortune was spent. And in light of the amount of money that was spent, there should be more (a lot more) than 550Hp.

Perhaps he'll post a dyno sheeet so we can see the power characteristics of his combo.

Default Thats right, haha (ladies_tonyg)

Good one. Well, as for the WSIR day. I do not track my car but I would be more than happy to go thru turns 1-8 and then side by side thru 9 for the straight. But I get the inside lane. I dont want some goof to spin into me.

After all, in a straight line is raw dyno power, and not driver experience for the most point.

Your a funny guy Tonyg. 996? The 997 looks more 993 than 996. Old school? During the ownership of my old 98S I had the PLEASURE of driving a 74'. Now this might be a little exagerated, but to make my point. I would rather have bought that car [73' ] and left the rest of the money in the bank. Oh, and by the way. If my current 993 was not such a neat ride which holds special meaning to me. I would have bought one (73'), and laughed at all you 996 TT 800PH guys. 73' or 2000? 996. What a joke. Do you even know what a real Porsche feels like. Its not at all just about HP and modern tech. You mean all these guys on the boards are just crying about the junk they bought and the problems they ar having and only WISHED they could get a 996. I mean what about the sound when it starts. The way the dash is flat and you drive over the hood. The boxcar like handling. The rawness of the interior. The way the windshield creeks over driveways. The flex of the body when you drive it hard. And that is just to name a few. But if you forgot what the Pre-996 feels like, here it is:

SMILES FOR MILES

And PLEASE do not bring in 924, 944 or 928's into this board as well.

Tony knows what the earlier cars are like. He owns a pretty sweet 911SC.
