performance question
Last week I sold my 965 3.3Turbo.Now I'm looking to buy a '92 964 C2 or a '88 3.2. (both cars are standard.)
I test drove both yesterday and I didn't feel any difference in performance between both cars, except maybe at higher speed the 964 was a bit better.
Is this normal or is there anything wrong with the 964.
Thanks,
Christophe

There are definitely tangilble increases in performance when going from a 3.2 Carrera to a 964 at most all speeds.
While 0-60 times are not the best judge in the 911 world, for comparison purposes, the factory claimed (for US models from my showroom brochures):
1987 3.2 Carrera - 6.1 seconds
1990 964 C2 - 5.5 seconds
I'd investigate the 964 to see if it was operating correctly.
Good luck,
Jay

You can narrow that gap pretty easily - if you have a heavy or not in top tune 964 against a euro 3.2 - or a Steve Wong chipped car - it can be pretty much a wash. I know of several folks that have seen low 5 second 0-60's in 3.2's with premuffler, sport muffler and steve W chip. Where you should feel the difference with the 964 is the torque below 5000 rpms. And Car and driver did a 0-60 on a 1984 Carrera at 5.4 seconds - so I have always taken these with a grain of salt...

In the past we've seen and talked about sub 5.0 second 0-60 times for 964's obtained by car magazines too...
Feel..... that's the key. U said u didn't feel any difference. The 964 may well be .4 sec faster to 62 mph... but without a stopwatch it will be difficult to judge with your butt.
The 911 is certainly less refined and more raw... I bet there was nothing wrong with the 964... it was just less involving

My 2 cts-
I'd take them both to the same stretch of road and get the "feel" of 40-80mph or 70-100 or something like that.
0-60 relies t0o much on how much you want to abuse the dirve train and driver skill/experence. Besides you probably don't drive the car that way. The beauty of these cars is in how they do 40-80-40 transtiions.

Thanks for the replies.
I'm not sure, but insn't there a difference between a 3.2 in europe and a 3.2 in america?
Mayby that is the reason?
Thanks,
Christophe
p.s. yesterday evening I bought the '88 3.2 anniversary.

I agree with Jon. I have been a passenger and driven both. The feeling is not much difference between the two. The 3.2 feels more raw and this may contribute to it feeling faster than what it is. The 964's are much more refined.
Congratulations on the 88 purchase. Any more details?

The car is a 911 3.2 '88 anniversary (diamond blue with the signature seats). She has driven 92000 miles.
The first owner was from germany, the second owner from belgium and the third was an english captain.
The engine had a revision in the year 2000 in england.
I bought it from a good indep. garage here in belgium with a full year warranty.
I asked the garage to put a sport cat., air-filter and sport exhaust in the car and this evening she will be ready. Can't wait...

! Just FYI, and maybe to avoid confusion, the Diamond Blue '88 that you just purchased is a Commemorative Edition (sometimes referred to 'unofficially' as Signature Edition), not an Anniversary Edition. The Anniversary Editions were offered in '89 (most were silver, some were black). I love mine...enjoy!Keith
