Post Headlight upgrade recommendation

I'm wanting to change to a more powerful & better looking headlight on my 85 911. I'd like to get the style that is more flush mount than the stock ones. What are these called (H4/H5?)and where is the best place to buy these?

Thanks!

You can put the H4 or the H5s in- they are both flush. It will cost a bunch less to get the H4 kit which everyone sells... I think Pelican has the best price, and a full description of each.

You want 2 Bosch # 0 301 800 101
They are H4 and do not have DOT mandated nipples on the glass for aiming(no one checks for these anyhow). They are available for use with varying bulb wattage. If higher wattage bulbs are used(say 80 and up) headlight relays are recommended.

The H5 has the same appearance(though with the correct nipples) but is not as flexible as far as bulbs, the light pattern is not as good as the H4, and they are more expensive than the H4.

Do not confuse the Bosch parts above with conventional old style US H4 lights.

Here is a pic of the oem Bosch as delivered on my '76 Carrera 3.0

Bill -
Where did you get your Bosch headlights? Do you remember how much you paid? Did you have to buy the extra rings & get them painted?

Thanks!

If you want to keep a stock look to your 1986 or older 911, you can also buy H4 headlights that replace the stock sealed beam bulb. They drop right in, look factory, use the existing trim rings (no painting or replacing) and improve lighting over the sealed beam bulb. Places like Performance Products carries them for about $45 each.

Just a thought... I liked them on my '86.

Those are oem. The car was a ROW Carrera 3.0 delivered in Germany, when I brought it over we temporarily replaced them with DOT legal H4's(with vastly inferior lighting). The part # should be available from any Bosch supplier. the painted rings are extra, I think you may need to go to a Porsche dealer. The Bosch come with chrome rings which the painted ones slip over.

I've been looking into this for some time and still have a question. If you use the black primered headlights do you still need the additional trim ring? If so, is there any benifit to getting the black ones, if you are going to cover up the black anyway?

Nice photos by the way!

Thanks

I bought mine from Europroducts on ebay. I got the set with black trim rings and had them painted. They look great on my 83!

You don't need the additional rims. Some people like body color(ala oem), others like chome, or blacck, or some other color.

Will the stock trim ring used on the 1987-89 carreras work with the euro H-4?

Thanks. I want to paint the lights body color, so it sounds like I just need to get the black trim light, as opposed to the chrome ones, and have them painted. Any thoughts on a fair cost to paint the lights?

Thanks

I just bought a pair of the H-4's off E-Bay from Eurosport for $232.50/pr. Eurosport has them listed on their website for $162.50 each, while Performance/Automotion has them for $190 each. Mine come with a black trim ring that can be painted to match the car. A body shop quoted me $50-$70 to paint. They come with the standard 55/60W lamp. Has anyone tryed the 55/100 or the 80/100? I'm wondering if on-coming traffic has fits with these....

I'm using 100 watt high beam(forget what the low beam is). For the higher wattage bulbs relays should be used, all of the current for the lights goes through the column switch oem.

The cut off pattern is so sharp that on low beam I have never had a problem(unlike my Audi with discharge lamps, which always gets flashed even when on low)
