Default Please share your 911 Trailer Hitch solutions...

I need to start trailering my tires to the track. I can't take the stress of any more 500 mile trips on bald R-Compound tires. Are there any off the shelf hitch solutions for a 911/930? Please share your experience.

Thanks
Peter

not a good idea IMO. A hopped up 930 is a handfull for 100 miles, let alone 500, especially with a trailer! get a tow rig for the whole car on a trailer or drive with your 4 ply victor racers

I've seen several solutions where a trailer hitch is used with a Harbor Freight or similar $250 trailer. Trailer hitch can attach to each bumper shock, and probably needs some support behind the hitch. Not a good idea, however, to use the engine mounting for support (in the event someone hits your rear).

In California, a trailer means you have a lower speed limit than un-trailered traffic. This is a pain in the neck.

I use a roof rack.

Jack - where'd you get the roof rack? what make / model is it? I have an '81SC that I've started taking to the track, so I want to get an extra set of wheels & tires.

fwiw - I'm heading to Laguna Seca w/ POC in a couple weeks... based on your example, I'm going to take it extra safe around turn 9.

thanks,
Matt

I have a photo somewhere of my 911 towing my RIB, (Rigid Inflatable Boat). The trailer, boat and motor weighed about 500#. I drilled 4 holes in the bumper under, behind the license tag, mounted a heavy "L" bracket with a 1 7/8" ball on it and towed this " rig" from Fort Lauderdale to PA. This was in late 90, and it snowed in PA at the end of the trip....no problems, just the looks on peoples faces as they passed me...I kept it at no more than 60mph the whole trip.
I brought the boat back to FL on the roof of my Jeep Cherokee in the spring.

Here is a nice write up on installing a trailer hitch on a 964, but I have seen similar setups on SCs.

I disagree. A 930 with trailer and street tires is much nicer to drive long distance than a 930 with track tires. That kind of trailer weighs nothing.

It's a Thule rack. Which is to say, it's a pair of their crossmembers that are designed for a car with a driprail. To keep the two pieces from sliding apart when the wheels are on them, I went to Home Depot and got a (c-shaped) length of steel and a few u-bolts. I didn't even cut the steel piece to length, I just secured it to each crossmember. You can see it sticking out in front and back in the picture up above.

I run a broomhandle through the center of all four wheels, and use elastic and cinch straps to hold the wheels together and down. The broomhandle allows me to 'thread' one long cinch strap through all four wheels to tie them together.

Here's another picture where the rack is sitting in front of the car. You can see the steel bar. There's tape and pipe insulation padding wrapped around the fasteners that connect it to the crossmembers so the tires wouldn't get damaged. (Hey, I did it the night before.)

As a side note, that's all the stuff we carried with us in the car for the Open Track Challenge. All week. Two guys in the car, a full cage, and a lot of stuff.

I got the Thule pieces at a biccycle shop in Westood. I think it's called Helen's?

BTW, I used to pull a small ture trailer with a big utility box attached to it with my old 300ZX and it was easy to forget that I was pulling a trailer even at speeds above 80mph. THe triler fully loaded doesn't weigh more than 300 lbs.

No help with the problem but (hopefully) an interesting story.

I had cause to correspond with Vic Elford a few years back and he told me he once had a 911 Sportomatic as a 'company car' and used it to tow a caravan all over Europe. He also told me that there used to be races for car and caravans and that he had great fun doing 6 wheel drifts in his 911!
