'87 Carrera Clutch noise
I have an almost perfect 1987 Carrera Targa.
When you push the clutch peddle "too far" it makes a grinding noise.
The distance that is "too far" used to be when the peddle was all the
way on floor. Now it is really close to when the clutch is still engaged.
It sounds fine when its engaged and if you push the clutch peddle
slowly you can stop it before it happens, but it is getting more difficult to do.
I had the clutch replaced 2 years and 16,000 highway miles ago.
This grinding started 8 or 9 months after it was replaced.
My mechanic said, "don't push it so far in".
thanks for any advice. I am really concerned and not driving the car
because of it.

Jim,
Thanks for the reply.
yep it sounds bad. the grinding is big. as if the whole assembly were
hitting the transmission housing. (Sounds like putting a wrench in a
slow spinning alloy wheel)
is this possible?
I sure don't want to take the clutch out.
but I want it right.
i guess I was hoping for a magic wand.

No, you need to take care of it. The worst thing I've seen in a G50 bell housing is when the boses that hold the pivot shaft ripped off the tranny. Thats not an easy repair.

Jim (or anyone else) a question on a 915 tranny. I had the tranny in my '86 coupe rebuilt about 2 yrs and 4,000 miles ago. When I pull to a stop and let out the clutch at idle, I get a rattling sort of noise, I push in the clutch and it seems to stop. The noise is not "loud" or grinding. Should I be concerned?
TIA

I would be concerned about any abnormal noise. I don't think I've ever heard a rattle like that from a 915. Ck the clutch cable and make sure you have some freeplay.

superpilot, has the transmission had the throwout bearing shaft kit installed? If not, that may be a contributor. The most common problem is the clutch is hard to depress due to the old needle bearings going bad. The kit uses a larger shaft and eliminates the roller bearing.
