Default Porsche virgin seeking 911 in St. Louis or Midwest

Well, this is my first Rennlist posting - I'm in the market for a 911, probably an SC or Carerra ('80s). This will be a second car; not a daily driver - but certainly no garage queen, and no track time (at least initially).

I'm looking to spend in the teens. Probably a coupe, but would consider cabs and targas, but not at additional cost.

I've driven a few, but I'm willing to seek out all candidates in the market before proceeding. I have read up in many past issues of Excellence, and have been soaking up the Rennlist and Pelican forums.

I've seen all the Daniel Schmitt cars on ebay, which would be great if they didn't have the worst reputation in America.

If you have or know someone who has or is considering a good, clean, mainly stock car, please respond.

Thanks!

Take a look in the Rennlist classifieds. I found a "bone-stock" '84 Carrera in there that just happened to be pretty close to me, & I believe there are a few in the Mid-West/Southern states as well.
Don't be afraid to send the owner an email if the ad seems old, several of the cars I requested information on were still available with ads posted over a month ago.
Good Luck!

Default Did I just miss out on the deal of the year?

...and did someone here pick it up?

Today, on a "general" used car site, I came across THIS one

'89 Carrera 4 Coupe Stone Grey
88k miles
3rd owner
all records going back to '93
just had 15k service incl. valve adjustments

...$16.9k OBO - 16.5k took it YESTERDAY - D'oh!

I read in Excellence that the early 964's had some issues, but most likely the car had that already resolved. Excellence values were like $22k-29k.

I didn't get as far as a Carfax or PPI, but even with a strike or two against it, that seems like someone stole it. I'm guessing by the placement of the ad and the fact it was on the market less than 3 weeks, it was the case of not knowing what you've got.

Are you here in the mid-west? There is a 1987 triple black cab on eBay that is in Chesterfield west of St. Louis City proper.

Dan Schmitt seems to be doing better if you look at the eBay feedback although the past is still there. There is quite of a bit of turnover in the sales department, but 1) they don't really deal on prices and 2) they get new cars in all the time from all over. So take the description with several grains of salt.

You might go to the PCA web site at www.pca.org, click on regions, pick the one that covers the area around you, and look at the each of the web sites, as many have online for sale listings.

Yes, in Wildwood - about 5 minutes from Chesterfield. I'm primarily thinking coupe, but would consider cab/targa if the deal/car is right.

I'll check out ebay and see how it looks - thanks.

Thanks,

Craig

You might check this thread:

I have a post about Schmidt in there. You have to be careful with them, but they occasionally have some really great cars, and they will negotiate on price.

There has also been an SC for sale locally - I believe it was in the Post last weekend at $10K, started at $14.5K a few months ago. A friend of mine looked at it - sounds like an average car, but not a really desireable color (some shade of brown, but it might be bronze). Reid Vann has done all the service so they could fill you in too.

I'm in Edwardsville; let me know if I can help you in any way.

Thanks, Dave.

I had done a search on the archives for "Schmitt" and hit that thread (among many) that basically say:

1. Watch them, they're shifty
2. They get a lot of 911's, usually very good condition, but priced accordingly.
3. Always get a PPI and be careful with your deposit.

Not too sure that's the type of group I like to do business with, but I will probably at least check out their inventory from time to time.

I had seen that ad in the Post, and have a call in to the owner.

I agree, they've gotten a lot of bad comments over the years. But the way I see it, if you can confirm that they have a great car and the price is fair, why not? You have to be diligent with anyone you buy from, so it's not that much different. But I certainly wouldn't just go in there and buy a car without getting a PPI and confirming the current market value first. That's what I did, and I ended up with an excellent 1-owner, low mileage Carrera at a very decent price.

Whatever, if I run across any good cars I'll let you know.

Hmmm. I saw the ad, but it was a black on black '84 Carrera. Reid Vann had done all the work.

I now own it!!!

After 20 years of lusting after the 911, I finally found my car.

1984 Carrera
Black on black
Phone Dial Wheels (ok, not my first choice)
Very stock, except K & N Cone Filter
150k original miles, recent tranny rebuild and new clutch (shifts better than the '88/G50 with 80k miles I drove last week)
New Dunlops on Front/Bridgestones on rear.

PPI done by Reid Vann revealed only that brakes were nearing end of life, and noted "cosmetic issues". RV had also done all the maintenance for last 10 years, so good records going back that far; they said the owner had been "very good" about bringing the car in for maintenance.

Minor cosmetic issues, include:
1 inch paint chip on driver door window frame (to primer)
2 or 3 dings, but very, very slight
small tear in headliner
2 inch seam parting on driver side bolster (not torn)
minor pen hole in driver seating surface (smaller than a dime)

It dripped about 2 drops of oil all weekend on my garage floor, including 4 trips out and back. Absolutely no smoke from exhaust. Runs and drives very well.

Original owner: Tito Landrum of STL Cardinals (sort of like George Costanza's John Voit car!)

I got this car for well below Excellence values (even for "poor" condition). I'm not sure if it was the mileage, the seller's lack of marketing skills, or just the market for these cars in general, but I'm not complaining. I plan to address all the issues and drive it regularly on weekends, etc. The track is beckoning as well for a PCA drivers school.

The pix (needless to explain, my 8 year old son is excited in last pic):

Good for you, Craig! Sounds like you got a great car at a great price! We'll have to meet up sometime.
