Greetings & Happy Holidays. I'm looking for a trickle charger for a 1997 911 993 C4S for my mom. The Porsche Charge-O-Mat II Battery Charger, Porsche (958-044-901-71) has been recommended and a cigarette lighter plug in would be really easy for her. However, the OEM website says this part will "not fit" the '97 911. Does anyone know if it will work or why it won't? A friend with a newer than 2000 911 uses this successfully.
Thank you!

There are two different versions of the Porsche-branded Charge-O-Mat. The older version has a slightly longer cigarette-lighter plug and will work for older cars (up to at least through 991.1). Though that plug will seem to fit into the receptacle of a newer car, it won't actually charge the battery, leading to potential disaster (a discharged, frozen, and cracked battery). Conversely, the newer version Charge-O-Mat has a slightly shorter cigarette-lighter plug, with a slightly different configuration specific to newer cars; I do not believe it will charge the battery of an older car. So, Porsche is correct.
raspritz, Do you know how I might find an older cigarette lighter trickle charger? Or, do you know how I would tell if a new one is effectively charging the battery or not (before the battery dies?). Or do you recommend a new trickle charger that attaches to the battery instead? That is a little harder for mom, but she has done that in the past. (the old trickle charger started getting very hot to the touch, making her very uncomfortable, which is why we're looking for a new one for her)
Thank you!
Dawn
a lot will depend of the 993 lighter is directly attached to the battery or needs ignition on to to be connected. Older air cooled cars do NOT have lighter attached directly to battery
newer ones like the 993 not sure, you should maybe ask on that forum. This forum is for 911s ( up to 89 )

Hi Dawn. It appears that PelicanParts sells both the first- and second-generation Charge-o-Mats, and specifies which work with which models. I only know all of this because I bought my wife a first-generation Charge-o-Mat as a Xmas gift (not knowing there were two versions and that her 2019 Cayman GTS came with the second-generation Charge-o-Mat. And her battery discharged over the winter, froze, and cracked. So now I use her Xmas gift to trickle-charge my 2014 TurboS. By the way, as your mom drives a '97 993 C4S, she must be a very cool lady. Maybe buy her the very cool Porsche Retro trickle-charger, that looks a bit like a car battery. I have one for my '69 911; it comes with wires that attach to the battery and is very easy to connect/disconnect as you want. Suncoast Porsche sells it for $140. https://www.suncoastparts.com/produc...BoCLugQAvD_BwE

Thanks everybody for your help. Suncoast Porsche Parts is also very helpful. Prior to 2001, the cigarette lighter socket is slightly larger than in cars 2001 and newer. Newer plugs are smaller and will not fit or maintain contact correctly, resulting in inconsistent connection and possible damage. Also, the '97 911 cigarette lighter does not go to the battery, so even with a lighter socket upgrade, the lighter socket trickle charger is not an option for mom with this car. (Suncoast sells a $35 socket upgrade but it is only for the 969). Mom was ladies class champion for years in slalom and time trials in the '80s: she's badass behind the wheel and OWNS the road. Long since retired, she's keeping up this car while trying to figure out what to do with it. The old trickle charger started overheating, warranting a replacement. Thank you everybody for your help. Happy holidays.

yeah thought so about the lighter to the battery thing, so makes any charger that way useless .
I have a connection direct to the battery with a quick disconnect, if i forget to disconnect ( and it has happened ) the wire just disconnects at the quick disconnect with no real harm.
