If you wanted to make an initial investment of $15k
If possible I would like to stay with in this price range with suspension and other track worthy mods (suspension, seats/harness, tires)
Ideally I would like a 911sc but an willing to go older if I need to
what model year 911 would you get if you intended to use it for:
1)50% open track days
2)40% autocross
3)10%street
Thanks for the advice!

Here's my recipe for fun:
69-73 911. 3.0, 3.2, or 3.6. (Or a built 2, 2.2, 2.4, 2.7)
Gutted, roll-cage, SC Flares. 17 X 8.5 F, 17 X 10 Rear.
Seats, harnesses, common suspension mods.
All can be accomplished for 15k, and you'll have to hold on to your a** to drive it.
But that's just me...I'm biased.

Probably best to lower that 10% street driving to >1%. Once you remove the sound deadening and radio, install the single racing seat, five point harness and the racing exhaust? You really won't be using it on the street for any reason except getting it to and from the track.

I drive my 911 on the street about five days a week. It has a handful of track mods, including 400/600 springs, very little sound deadening, and monoballs. I have some sound-deadening foam pieces I set over the back seat area, and it's pretty pleasant around town.
I think an SC is a good choice for what you're describing (although you could also consider a spec Miata, and do it for even less). If you're more of an aggressive DIY-er, an early car with a 3.2 would offer more bang for similar bucks.
Also: don't skimp on the safety stuff, and get one of those panoramic clip-on rear-view mirrors.

Jason:
If you are looking for a 911 that has track mods and the work was done right, that will put you in the 20K area. If you buy a bone stock car and have it modified yourself, the price goes up. I chose the latter and the plus side to going this route is that I know the work was done right by someone I trust without reservation (the mechanic who works on it) and I have a very reliable track appliance.
A wise old racer told me once that whatever you have invested in a track car, you'll be lucky to get 50% of that when you sell, and that's if it is a winning car.
I second Jack on the safety equipment.

Well, here is the one which I just bought a little over a week ago. This was the best kind of deal, as 2 owners ago had spent the bucks on the race components: Recaros with 5 point harnesses, roll bar, front and rear adjustable sway bars, camber bar, cooling air ducts for front brakes, slotted front rotors, ATE blue brake fluid, upgraded Bilsteins, and probably some other stuff I haven't found yet. It is an '87 Coupe, so has the G50 tranny and hydraulic clutch. Just shy of 170k miles on the clock.
Currently undergoing a significant diet which has already included deletion of the A/C system, stereo, and many other items. Purchased for less than $11k - A deal I could not pass up.
Good luck in your search!
Tom

You can pick up a used Carrera for pretty cheap these days - 12-17K - most are very capable on the track without much modification. Strip the interior, AC and such and out of the box you have a pretty capable car.

I've heard many a Porsche-phile say, "Buy a 911 if you want to have fun on the track, but buy a 944 if you want to win!" Haven't never tracked ither, I can't comment! I plan to track my 911SC next year, because I enjoy the challenge.
M3s make great track cars...you can get a decent E30 M3 for around $12K, or a decent E36 M3 for $16K.

the early cars are the lightest and the '72 has the best wt. dist.
a lot will depend on what class you run in - or want to....
IF you get an SC, how far are you willing to strip it down? It will never be as light as an early car.
