Reviving this old thread with the hopes of seeing some before pictures of the refinished fan/housing. I've just purchased my 85 Cab and I'm looking to shine up the fan and housing but I'd like to know if it's too far gone to get a decent result, something close to what @theiceman got would be awesome.
Also, @Rennman commented that it's a lot of labor to get the fan and housing out....I'm new to the Porsche but not afraid to get in there. Any ideas on how long it should take to get the fan and housing out?
Any help or advise is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
this is what mine looked like before i started.. that is cosmoline on the fan and mine came off pretty easily. i would stay with a dremmel with a copper wire wheel and see what it does. of course start on the back side so you can se the results first
Once the fan, intakes etc are all shiny and new looking does anyone have a way to keep them that way? Ive never used autosol oil or spray on clear coat. Are these good for keeping metal in good looking condition?
yeah my spray on clear coat lasted about 8 years .. but it is an occasional driver...
i seem to remember using a dremel on my fan with a brass brush , results above on how it turned out.. to each his own.
After a many winter projects I’m finally stoked with the results! It was my goal after purchasing this 3.2 carrera six years ago to totally restore it. Every winter I did a section of the car.
looks really really great, just needs an engine insulator pad installed!

you can do better .. get back at it .. did you use autosol ?
the problem i have seen with drivers that do powder coating is with all the small stones ets , i have seen it start to come off, especially at the edges of the fins, then it looks terrible , and once its been power coated once it is very difficult to get off to redo.
The ones in the pics look great though
Having had a fan wrecked by a powercoater who put too much on (sags, uneven), be careful with it. Too heavy and it looks terrible and you will never get it off unless you are a sadist with sandpaper.
I had to buy a new one and the aluminum is fantastic, doesn't chip, and with a clear coat looks brand new 2 years later.
I have since taken up both powdercoating and Cerakote. Cerakote is far thinner and much tougher than powder or paint and ideal if you want to change the color of you fan. Getting the color "right" for a fan though is probably very tricky unless you want to change the color.
Pick your battles I guess.
