Default 1986 911 Targa - shorted light switch

Hi
friend wanted to change the main light switch. Unfortunately there was a change in the switch design but he followed the removal procedure for the previous version and managed to short out the switch - smoke etc. Ordered the correct replacement light switch- removed and replaced - warning buzzer comes on but nothing else - no lights and nothing happens when the ignition is turned on.
suggestions on troubleshooting would be appreciated.

At the risk of stating the obvious - have the fuses been checked?

And I would guess it’s difficult to burn out the switch to the point where it would need replacement.

Yes all fuses checked. The old switch itself was damaged beyond repair.

Do the parking/side marker or dash lights come on at all?

Power for the headlights (high and low beam) goes though the turn signal stalk - that’s often a failure point.

Thanks- I believe he replaced that- no lights - perhaps he made a mistake on the connections. It does connect to the ignition switch- is it possible he shorted that out as well?

I’m confused. What was replaced - the light switch on the dash or the turn signal high/low stalk?

Sorry both were replaced - he was originally having issues with the wiper switch.

All I can suggest is getting ahold of a wiring diagram and methodically checking each connection, first on the switch in the dash and then on the stalk.

Here’s an image from pelican on the headlight switch wiring. He also needs to inspect the wiring for damaged insulation, particularly if he’s had a smoke leak.

The connectors are quite close together so care needs to be taken putting them back. Also a good time to fit a fuse into the dash light circuit if this hasn’t already been done.

Always disconnect your battery when working on electrical components

Yes - he will do that from now on. He had not plugged in one wire - all works perfectly. Thanks for the help.
