If it was me, I would check all the plug wires with a multimeter. Check for end-to-end continuity, the lead should measure 3000 Ohms or 4000 Ohms, +/- 10%, depending on whether the wires have a resistor, or not.
If you have an inductive timing light, hook the pickup on each plug wire, to make sure each is getting spark. Make sure the plug end of the wires are all snapped into place on the plugs, they can be hard to get on until you have done it a few times (and sometimes not even then..).
Check the points while you are at it.
Worst case, you can also swap back the old cap and rotor, see if it fixes things.

yes, the rotor is in it's proper spot.
the car does start, but runs terribly.
Ill check the wires and get back.
I think this whole ordeal started due to the cam cover seal leaked oil right on the distributor

Don't give up yet, there isn't really anything to screw up there. Did the timing get changed somehow?
I am not sure what you mean by "cam cover seal leaked oil right on the distributor", the internals of the distributor are well above any place an oil leak should get wet.
You did verify the plug wires were firmly on the plugs? You can feel them sort of snap into place.
I have never owned a car with points, so maybe someone else could tell you how to check and adjust them.
