Default How does the shift **** come off?

Silly question huh?

I'm trying to replace my **** with a MOMO one but the thing won't budge. Does it twist off? or is there a fastener on it somewhere?

btw the car is an 80 SC

pry off the cover first - then the allen wrench removes it...

Tommy-

have to disagree with Jeremy - your 80 SC does not have an allen screw holding the shift **** on - that was introduced with the '87 that got the G-50 transmissions. Hammer and 15MM (or vice grips) should do the trick. Make sure you have a new crush sleeve.

Thanks to Tim (below) for pointing out my initial error.

I wedged a screwdriver(or 15mm) into the crush ring at a 90* angle and took a hammer and pounded away at the screwdriver. About a half an hour later, the crush ring popped off. A little trick I use to ensure the aftermarket momo **** never accidentally slides off(happend to a friend during a DE ) is to get some heat shrink tubing and place it around the shaft before fitting the new ****. The tubing also helps the allen screws(for the new momo ****) to get some more grip.

If all else fails, hacksaw. better than swinging around a hammer in there if you don't want to yank the shifter out.

Just to clarify, the shift **** held down with the vertical allen screw under the removable center cap in the **** was actually introduced with the G50 gearbox in '87, not '86, (which still had the 915).

Good luck,
Tim

Tim--
I stand corrected - you are absolutely right. I've edited my first post as well.

Does this apply to all MOMO ***** going back in time. I'm in the same predicament at the moment, in an attempt to replace the two front shifter bushings...

No. The 15mm wrench trick is for the factory **** only. I *think* the Momo ***** are held by set screws.

ok i tried a while back to remove my momo **** to replace shifter bushings removed the 3 allen screws. **** still wouldnt come off, pounded the hell out of it using the 15mm wrench and hammer trick, still no luck, rather than destroying or damaging the solid wood **** which I love and dont think they make any more, i took the center console apart with the **** still on. which took 3 times as long. but worked
