Cracks in door check strap mounting surface...can I have these welded?
I'm dealing with the door check strap popping issue. I removed the door check strap and found that the surface it bolts to on the door has multiple cracks, inside and out.
If you know someone who can tig weld the cracks , it would be a much cleaner job , unless whoever uses a mig is a good welder.
Otherwise it might make a mess … although i’m guessing the repair kit serves just that purpose.
No need to weld. Had the same thing years ago.
bought this reinforcement kit from Rennline also available on Pelican: https://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog...door-stops.htm
Scroll down to fourth item…..works like a charm.
cheers,
Just dealt with this a few months ago. Bought the Rennline kit and a Porsche door check strap - because I didn't want an aftermarket check strap. If you do replace the check strap, please read the threads that discuss opening it up and shaving about .004" (iirc) off of the "blocks", then install.
This is because the plates tighten down and sit perfectly flat and do an excellent job.
Unless you can weld such thin metal , then grind it perfectly flat you will defeat the purpose of the reinforcement plate and it will "sit on" the weld. not really allowing the plate to do its job.

That is the idea, have it welded and then ground flat.
The cracks are so bad that it moves and pops loudly even with the rennline reinforcement kit.
that would be tough , doable from inside the door maybe .. but from the outside almost impossible.. good luck though would be great if you pulled it off...
just so you dont feel alone in this
the blue is the grease i sprayed in before i realized what the issue really was .
18096719]he did say he put the plates on and it still cracks, i have a buddy with the same, he has the reinforcement plates on jet it still cracks like a SOB.
my first attempt and it cracked but then I found I had the plate installed outside the door stopper area when it should have been inside. Once I corrected the plate it was tight and the door closed solid clunk

there are actually two plates and you sandwich the door metal, but maybe my buddy did it wrong too...
