Default Seat upgrade

Choice is this, either recover my ageing front seats, or since i'm doing autox and going to start a couple of DE's, upgrade. Keeping in mind 99% of my driving is on the street and comfort is very important what seats should I be looking at?

I've found in my 81SC and 93 C2 that Recaro SRD's are a good upgrade. They are lighter than stock, maybe 3/4" lower, cloth for better grip, slight side bolsters that provide some more support without making it tough to get into, they're adjustable for back angle (I move the back forward for track and back for street driving), come in several colors, and you can get various color 'Recaro' logo stitching at no extra charge (I've had tan seats/brown logo stitching and navy blue seats with navy blue logo). Extra charge is the slot in the bottom of the seat for a sub harness strap. Best price I found was at Greenfield Imported Parts in Massachusetts (www.gicp.com). I believe the SRD has been replaced by the Speed model.

Now, with all that said, you need to sit in various seats to find what's comfortable for you. SRD's happen to fit me very nicely, however, I did sit in quite a few different seats before settling on the SRD's. There were several seats of interest, however they were uncomfortable when I tried them out.

Thanks Bill, next event I'll bum some seat time in various makes and see what fits, no use spending unless the fit is right.

99% of my driving is on the street and comfort is very important ...

- maybe an alcantera recover is the way to go?

Leather is nice but hot in summer, cold in winter

You can also get the bolster padding increased a bit.

Why toss them out ?

Its a suede type of leather. Great for not sliding around in the seat and it feels really good. Many European upscale cars use alcantara instead of leather.

SRD's are a good choice since the folding feature won't limit your car's usability. Also, check out the Cobra Misanos. They look like they're shaped well, although I haven't sat in them.

Alcantara is a an excellent alternative to leather and cloth. It is a synthetic psuedo-suede. Very good grip and feel but only marginal breathability compared to cloth. Can't beat cloth for the track.

I had a chance to drive a car with the reclining Cobras and found them to be very good, like most Cobra products. Almost no headroom is gained however.

You may want to consider true competition seats. I tried a number of different aftermarket seats for my SC and found that the competition seats are by far the most comfortable for me. I looked at the SRD's and the Cobra Misanos... great seats but not as good lateral support as a comp seat.

I track the car as well as daily driving car and find that the support of the comp seats really helps w/ fatigue on longer trips. For example, both my girlfriend and I found the Evo II's to be great for the 4-hour drive to Vegas.

You definately have to sit in as many seats as you can - they all fit a bit differently and

just my 2 cents.

I am upgrading the non-sport seats on my 911 as well. Given my 99% street driving, I am upgrading to a 944 sport seat. It has the large side bolsters, leather(leatherette?) surrond trim and a cloth inserts. The combination of the cloth inserts and the large side bolsters will be all I need to keep me in place for the two or three track events i do a year.

kirk, I was thinking along the same lines and have been checking the classifieds. I still want to sit in as many aftermarket seats as I can before I decide. Plan on keeping the car a long while and want to keep my back happy.
