Post Anyone know the best way to sell a concours '89 Carrera w/ only 16k miles?!

I've got an '89 Guards Red Carrera with tan leather that has only 16k miles on it, and my wife and I are going to start trying to have another child...and needless to say, the wife still hasn't gone back to work since the first one, and I've got WAY too much of my money simply sitting in the garage.

This car literally took me over 3 years of looking before I found one that was literally PERFECT! The vehicle still has the original Dunlops on it!

The bottom line is the car probably should go, but I want to get exactly what I know it's worth. Does anybody know of the best place to post a car such as mine? I don't want to simply put it in the Autotrader or Autotrader.com

Any ideas?

LD,

There are so many different venues to sell your car that it's hard to say which is best. My personal feeling is that here on Rennlist is a very good place to start.

Also, I like the PCA classifieds (which is free if you are a PCA member). I like this because this is a marketplace frequented by Porsche enthusiasts and most enthusiast-owned cars are well taken care of. If you go to the PCA web-site, you will also note that the many (not all) of the various regions have their own classifieds or "mart" sections as well. The Northeast region has one of the best classifieds which updated every other week.

Lastly, there are "brokers" who will try to sell your car for you, such as europeancarlocators and PAR. There are many others, but I'm on my way out of the office right now, so I can't keep writing.

Call me at home tonight if you wish and we can chat some more about getting your car sold. 845 268-9678.

Good luck with car and new baby!

You didn't mention if your car was a coupe or a cab but search for this thread on this board:

"Looking for Garage Queen 87 to 89 Coupe or Cab"

The guy wants a perfect car, and wants black interior, but he might make a concession on the tan interior for the perfect car.

Mark,

My car is a Carrera coupe (no tail)....and ironically enough, it was this gentleman's post that prompted me to think about selling mine. I forwarded my information to him, however, I don't think that he's willing to pay for a car like mine. Cars such as mine are almost impossible to find, and it takes the right person (with an appropriate wallet)to pull the trigger.

If I wanted to get 'retail' for my car, then I would simply put it in the autotrader. However, you would have to literally look through hundreds of these cars, before you could ever find one that was even CLOSE to what this one is. Thanks for the help though with your reply. If you ever come across anyone who you think might be the 'right' owner, then let me know! I'll be MORE than happy to reimburse you for your efforts!

Selling the Porsche???

One child is good enough!!! You only get one Porsche so she only needs one child!!! Just kidding!

But anyway, try www.thecarexperience.com. They sell some pretty high end cars. It's all online, looks like they work as a referral type business?? Looks like it has an international customer base. They go through a fair amount of cars. They also have lots of car brokers advertising on the site.

Good Luck

David, I hear what you are saying. After looking for almost two years, I finally found the car I was looking for. I purchased a 1988 Black on Black coupe with only 19k miles on the clock.

I found the car I wanted, and paid a premium for it. However, the car is mint, and other than an oil change and A/C recharge, I haven't had to spend a dime on the car.

Good Luck with what you decide to do. The right person will come along. You might want to try the classifieds in Excellence magazine. The ad is free.

I know how you must feel about your car, I'm the same way. Good Luck again.

Thanks for the understanding Mark! It's extremely tough to make yourself sell something that is so beautiful and unique. I know that if I ever sell the car, and decide that I want another one...I'll NEVER be able to find one like it again. Even if I was willing to put the years into finding one as I did this one.

Oh well, priorities are priorities.

David, several days ago, someone here was looking for a garage queen 87-89 coupe or cab. i believe his name was snowden. i'll bump his note to the top. Call Autobuy in Roswell. They like to deal in 80's 911s and usually have a couple low mile examples for sale. maybe they would be interested in yours. I think if they had yours on the floor, they would ask ~34-36k for it.

a couple weeks ago, you were looking for a mechanic in ATL who works on cars on the side, is this the car you wanted to adjust your valves on? I finally got hooked up with someone over the weekend to work on mine.

David,

I can really sympathize with your dilemma. I have a concours-quality 1987 Carrera Targa with 17k miles that I've owned for 5 years. In the pre-Internet era, it was even more difficult to find a low mileage, original, Guards red Targa. I finally located one in Missouri. It was an incredible example...original Dunlop tires and Porsche factory battery, books/stamps/tool kit, and even had the 30k service done.

I think that I paid a healthy premium for the car ($31k) back in 1997. However, in the long run, buying a low mileage, original 911 was one of the best purchases I've made. It's been a joy and has required nothing but replacement tires (for flat spotting) and a new Optima battery.

I bought my car from one of the better known Porsche locators, Team Motorsports (ads in Autoweek).

Your car will EASILY sell if you advertise it in Panaroma or PML (i.e. Porsche Market Letter). Don't let the naysayers or even Bruce Anderson tell you what's it worth. In my opinion, I wouldn't even consider any offers less than $30k for your car.

On the other hand, PLEASE don't sell the car through the parasitic type Porsche brokers who'll mark-up low mileage Porsches they'll scoop up from private owners...The name Richard Sloan always seems to irk me when I see his ads in PML. Oh well, it's a free market.

Take you time and you'll find the right buyer with the right price.

Good luck (and I hope that you change your mind!)

Charles,

Yes, I'm the one that was talking back and forth with you re: finding a mechanic. Who did you ever find in Atlanta?

I bought an 87 Targa with 23K on it in June 2001. The owner was asking $30,000. I paid $29,500 and consider myself lucky even though it was way over "market." Clean, origninal tires, correct and flawless in every way - the top hadn't even been folded. I started looking for a Targa to get an idea of what was out there 2.5 years before, and had the cash together for almost a year before I found the car.

A flawless coupe may fetch a little more. It may take awhile, but there are people out there looking. When I was looking I checked cars.com, Hemmings/hemmings.com, and Porsche Market Letter regularly. As it was my first Porsche, I had no access to PCA publications, though some areas are on the web now.

Good luck to you. Sell if you have to, but know that I have 3 children and they love the feeling that summer is coming when the get to ride in the summer car each spring. I put 3 point belts in the back for them (safety over originalty!), though I believe that '89's already have them. No car seat in the world will fit back there for the smallest, but he'll get to ride in the car in 2.5 years or so.

I just purchased an '86 930 with 7,000 miles. Although I didn't purchase the car through ebay, I did find out about it and bid on it there. There certainly is alot of junk (mostly by dealers) on ebay but it may be a good place to start.

When I started looking for a 930, I checked the usual places--PCA, Rennlist, Autotrader, local papers, etc. I just started looking at ebay to get an idea on prices. Even for that it was helpful since most listings include detailed pictures.

One day I came accross the exact car I was looking for. An extremely low mileage, original owner car in perfect condition. I bid on it, and although it did not meet the reserve, we finalized the sale over the next few eeeks.

In the end, although the car did not sell on ebay, it brought buyer and seller together. I did pay a premium, and was happy to do it. For $25 you can list your car on ebay with pictures and reach a tremendous number of people. For a special car like yours, pictures make a huge difference. And the more people who see it, the more likely you will find someone who appreciates it as much as you.

Good luck

Jim,

In the past 6 months, I've been offered ~$35k by a few different people (but of course wasn't in the market to sell) however, now that I am...I would imagine that I'll probably ask roughly that.

David,

Sounds ok, however in this economy it may take a while. As noted by several, the right buyer will come along. Could be tomorrow, could be in six months.

About two years ago, I found one that sounds very similar to yours (except color). It was an '89 coupe, all options, full leather with 18K miles. The seller was in Alaska and wanted $32K for it. By the time I contacted him, it was on it's way to Washington (I offed him $30K). I called the dealer in Washington and it was already sold $31.5K. That was when the economy was booming and lots of people had lots of $s.

Good Luck!
