carrera wheel upgrade
Looking to upgrade from stock fuchs 6 and 8 x 16 on my 89 carrera. I know this is a common project, but wanted to get fresh ideas. I am heavily leaning to bigger fuchs, but need help on what size and cost.
Thanks in advance.

Most likly if the front is 6 then the rear is 7, if so then move the rears to the front(with apprppriate tires, either 205/55 or 225/50) and purchase some 8 or 9 x 16 911/930 Fuchs for the back(225/50 or 245/45 tires)

Billy,
If you haven't already, you might want to check out the 911SC FAQ, as Fuch wheel options are reviewed in detail, and apply to your Carrera. It's at tech.rennlist.com

Go to the Web Boards home page and scroll (right page scroll bar, not the left bar) all the way down to the bottom. There you'll see 911SCFAQ under the Rennlist FAQs heading.

AES, the 8's were an option on the cars. I have 6's and 8's myself. I've been pondering changing the fronts to 7's, but my mechanic says that there's a chance they can hit the wheel wells and tear on "certain weird bump and turn situations."
Anyone have any advice on the fit of the 7's, and the resulting difference in handling that they'd make? Is it worth it?
Thanks.

billyc, Jgordon, & other 89 carrera owners are the only ones with the 6&8x16 wheel problem, as that was the only year where that combo was either standard as on the 89 or optional(never).
84-86 had 185/70 & 215/60 tires on 6&7x15 Phonedial std, with 205/55 & 225/50 on 7&8x16 Fuchs optional. In 87 the std. fronts grew to 195/65 still on 6s with the same 215/60 on 7 rear, the 16s remained an option except on the Clubsport where they were std. the final year 89 saw the 6&8x16 with 205/55 & 225/50 combo std.
As previously mentioned a common 16" upgrade at the front is 7 or even 8 x16 with the 205/55 or 225/50 tire. Either of these wheels should have +23.3 mm os. There are 911 and 944 versions of the Fuchs wheel available in this size, 944 versions have an advantage of better brake clearance. The bigger the tire/wheel combo the better the likelyhood that fender lip mods (especially at the left front) will be necessary.
If an upgrade is desired at the rear then the only larger 16" wheel is the 930 9x16 with a +15mm os. It replaces the +10.6mm os 8x16 std 911 version of the Fuch perfectly and should be used with 245/45 tires for best results. There will be no fitment problems at the rear with this wheel.
Another option for your car is aftermarket 17" rims in the same widths as the 16s. As long as tires no wider than 225/50x17 front and 255/40x17 rear are used there are few fitment problems with thse larger rims. Do stick with quality pieces from manufacturers like Kinesis, Fikse or BBS though. There are a lot of relatively weak and heavy 17" rims which should be avoided

r22tek, that was my understanding also and it was certaily so for the SCs. The std and optional sizes quoted above are from Morgans "Original Porsche 911" I guess that we shouldn't believe everything we read. This was probably the genesis of AES reply as the most common original 16" fitment which I have seen is the 6 & 7 combo.
The fitments which were given however are from personal experience on my 76 Carrera 3.0 which started with 7&8x15 Fuchs, went to 7&8x16 Fuchs, 7&9x16 Fuchs, 8&9x16 Fuchs and currently has 8&9.5x17 Kinesis. During this thus evolution the tires went from tiny 205/55 & 225/50x15 to 235/45 & 275/40 x17
