Question 1986 911 gas cap ?

I am looking to confirm that type of gas cap my '86 911 should have. Currently, there is a metal, non-locking one on there (the same as on my old '79 SC). Looking at the varous catalogs (Performance Product, Tweeks, Vertex, etc.) it seems that in '86 the cap should have been one of the red plastic ones. Can anyone with an '86 or with knowledge of this please confirm for me? Perhaps this was a mid model year change in '86 (mine produced in May 86).

Thanks,
PC

My '86 has a "goldish" colored non-locking gas cap. I do not know if this is the original gas cap though.

My '86 911 coupe has the old looking goldish cap too, non locking. It looks very dated. I have always wondered about this too, but, its only a gas cap, its never going to grow up and be anything else, and it works fine...so I leave it and concentrate on HP related parts.

There really is no reason to have a locking cap on a 911 as the door locked. We know how to jimmy it open but the average joe doesn't. Besides, isn't it nice to see metal instead of plastic there!

Thanks all,

I know it's a little thing with the gas cap, but I'm trying to learn what is right / not right about the car. So far, everything is checking out great.

My 86 failed its emissions test 2 years ago due to a defective gas cap. Every thing appeared fine, but apparently they look for the way it potentially vents fumes or something. Anyway, mine failed the strict test they do here...I had to pay to have the car completely retested, (after buying a new cap of course).

Is there a way to replace only the gasket on the cap and not the complete cap? I know this is possible on many other Porsche gas caps but I do not know if the rubber seal for this particular cap is available?

I'm not sure. but I have seen it. Check out Porsche and get a part # then go to several wholesale places. PCNA may end up the cheapest. If I recall correctly I saw it for under $5. Wish I could remember where.

I can see in PET a gasket listed next to the gas cap. Part number is 477 201 557 for up to 1979 and 477 201 553 for 80-89. Problem is, I do not know if this is THE gasket.

The gasket in the gas cap for the 996 and 968 was upgraded/superceded for emissions reasons and I know the same gasket can be used for 944 gas caps. Part number is 191 201 557 (suspiciously close to the number I found in PET :-) ). Cost from the dealer was USD0.64 when I needed one for my 951, maybe I should just spend the 64 cents and see if it fits.

I think the difference in the metal 86 gas cap and the red ones on 87-89 Carrea's is that the metal ones don't slip after tightening. The red one on my 88 Carrera slips when turned hard to close it. I assume this is let you know it is tight , but still able to remove. Red or shiny metal doesn't make any difference if it seals. I would suggest taking the old 0-ring seal to a bearing supplier as most of them have high grade silicon 0-rings (fuel and lubricant resistant) that will satisfy your need.

My old '86 also had the zinc plated metal gas cap. I bought a new black plastic cap that fit VW's that 'clicked' when it was tight in order to pass emissions. The original metal cap would not pass our pressure test either. I would just switch out caps right before the testing and then put the original cap back on the car and the black plastic cap on the shelf for the next emmissions test.
