Barnfind road trip CA to NY
Hi - thought we’d share the journey...
We found a chocolate 74 911 on Craigslist in Cali. It’s our first car and our first Porsche and we are driving it back home to NYC.
It was sitting in a barn for 30 years, one owner - a Vietnam vet airplane mechanic and when we found the car all that was needed was tires and shocks according to the seller. It’s also the reason not many made an offer on the car. From the receipts posted on the ad, the car had a full engine rebuild, new clutch kit and tank amongst other things done to it so we made an offer and flew out to get it.
The first week was a disaster, and we spent four days at the mechanics trying to figure out why after running smooth it started to shake in the upper gears. long story short a little piece of old barn/ fuel/ crud dislodged itself in the fuel line when we added fuel cleaner and was starving the engine. We found this after adjusting the valves, flushing the injectors, changing the sparks, cleaning the distributor, setting the points and tested for vacuum leaks.
It was basically having a heart attack until we found it - now she’s running like a champ.
Day one we put 580 miles on her and we are so amazed at the performance of the Porsche engine - the mpg isn’t bad either!
next up Albuquerque!
heres a link to pics so far on our Instagram if you want to look and follow...and the car is called beans.
if you have any bbq recommendations in the south send them out way!!

Wow that’s brave. This time of year especially with the weather, not to mention with a car that I’m sure had been sitting for a while. Congrats and good luck, keep us posted!!

certainly a great adventure. Good man for doing it. I always say that I am going to fly out and drive home, but wind up chickening out and have the cars shipped (lol, actually am not scared, just do not have the time!!!). Just bought a 914-6 in cali perfect candidate to take a cross country trip, but did not. Keep up the good adventure, I envy you
