SSI or B&B EXHAUST ?
83 911 SC. Which exhaust is better? Pros and cons? Are there other manufacturers that I should consider? Also, how about mufflers?

I just installed SSIs on my '81. They are beautifully designed and constructed and fit perfectly. Some other threads here have included comments about resonance from B&Bs and some disappointments with fit and customer service.

B&B is the better choice for 3.6-liter motors (until SSI makes a larger model).
Resonance with the B&Bs comes from the muffler, not the headers. B&B headers are very well-made. The mufflers, in my opinion, are garbage. I've got one on my 911 now, and it has come apart at almost every seam. I can't wait to throw it in the trash, and put on a Flowmaster that will last longer for about 1/10 the price.

I would call SSI or a good race engine builder on this. I've heard that SSI has dyno results proving their pipe size is just fine on the bigger engines.
It will also matter as to the intended use (race vs. street & AX).

I had the SSI's on my SC for 19 years. When I sold the car they looked like new. I had the B&B dual inlet 4" Dual outlet exhaust. Performed great. Not too loud but resonated at 3500 rpm. I had to repair it five times in the eight years on the car. It did set off car alarms when you drive by.

Street use would make any putative benefits from bigger pipe dia. of less importance. I would check with Jerry Woods, Steve Wiener, JEff Gamroth or someone similar in your area.
Monty makes a good muffler. The stock muffler is good as is the sprot mod (much louder). Dansk is or has an OEM for the stock muffler. I've heard the Fabspeed sometimes splits, but it is otherwise a good one.

Hi Randy:
Heat exchanger/header size is dependent on displacement and camshaft selection (RPM range).
There is no question that a 2.7-2.8-3.0 street engine works very well with the SSI's (1.5").
3.2's are on the fence,....with OEM emissions-type cams, the SSI's are fine. With "S" cams or bigger, one should use 1 5/8" headers or heat exchangers.
A stock 3.6 Motronic motor with SSI's really falls off badly above 5500 RPM. Installing GHL heat exchangers restored the lost power and allowed it to run to redline (6750) very nicely.
Regarding mufflers, we've had good luck with Monty & Dansk mufflers. Others do not hold up anywhere near as well. We just finished installing a 3.6 RS-spec motor into an SC and used a custom GHL heat exchanger/muffler combo. The sound level was very very nice without being intrusive and we'll see how well it holds up.
This car now lives in LA and I'll keep careful track of this one,... I really liked the sound level & appearance.

Thanks Steve. I can't remember who told me that rumor re SSIs being fine -- and it might have been re a 3.2L as that's what I am putting in my car.
I'm glad you posted to clarify -- an BTW, it sounds like your opinion is based on dyno results - true?
On a related topic -- I'd really like to see somebody make a lighter wt. muffler for these cars. I'm sure it can be done: 1. The C5 vette uses a Ti exhaust system, and 2. I saw a news article on MB coming out with lighter wt. mufflers for their cars (soemthing about the packing material). If it's going to be done, it'll be done in your (racing) sphere first. Can I get any of you guys interested in that?

Steve (or anyone else), I mentioned to you last week that I was installing a set of GHLS on my 3,2 Carrera. There is a HUGE resonance in the 2-3.5K area now. Have you heard this before? I just contacted GHL via email and hole to hear from them Monday. This is a dual-out set up.

For a 3 liter?, hands down SSI & your choice of sport muffler. The primaries are 1 1/2" OD/ 1 38" ID
As Steve saidd the 3.2s are on the fence especially w/ cams
For a 3.6 you need B&B/GHL or S-Car-Go if heat isn't of concern

LOL,...I do not use them on any street cars for that reason unless the car has a 3.6 since there are no other choices for heat exchangers. GHL will go a long way to make you happy and depending on which one you have, they have some longer mufflers that work fine.
We do not use B&B on anything beside Turbos.
