Default the "kids" and the 911???

Well my son's no "kid" anymore, nor are my daughters, youngest of whom are 19 and goes up from there with one getting married in a month; and they are all responsible kids ...oh, sorry, "kids." So I aint getting any younger and have been thinking about the best way to reward their being good, hard-working, responsible kids with teaching them how to drive a 911 which has, in truth, always been on their minds since little youngins stuffed in the back of the 993. So while my intentions are good, I don't want my 915 trans trashed with crunched synchros, let alone any "money shifts," so was considering putting in a Seine which offers "some" measure of insurance against killing the trans/engine. Any thoughts on some hedges against the destruction of a perfectly good SC? I know, I know, but they're worth it ...for the most part!!

When I taught my son to drive a stick it was in “our” stock 2L 914 which had a 901 gearbox. I applied a “$” sign decal on the **** after having a discussion about the “money shift” as a reminder. 10 years later and all good; tomorrow he and I will co-pilot our 911ST at Buttonwillow at the annual R Gruppe track day. Oh...I also helped him get a job in high school as a lot-boy at Porsche San Diego. He became the self proclaimed King of 1st gear and reverse!

I have a Seine on my 73S, highly recommended system.

I'd teach them on an old truck first. Lotsa torque and they learn a manual easily, then change their technique just a bit for a 911.

I got my 19 year old son a 944 and he loves it. Taught him how to drive a manual shift on a boxster. If he ruins the 944 (which he will not he is very careful) it is not a big loss like a 911 would be

Taught my boys to drive a stick as soon as they could reach the pedals- luckily had a 1/2 mile long driveway to practice on. Did it with a 325i but they adapted to the 901 gearbox in my 914's OK. If you're really worried, in the old days a beetle was the best car to learn to drive a stick but you may have trouble finding one in decent condition for that task!

It's really sad that almost all kids these days have NO idea how to drive a stick. When my boys were in high school back in the late 1990's and early 2000's, they were the only kids in their circle who knew how to drive a stick...

Hey Nicky,
I envy you with your son doing an event at Buttonwillow as that is one of my goals: to get any one of my kids to desire a DE day at Buttonwillow or StreetsWillow ...man that would be a dad's dream come true!! But one step at a time, eh? I think getting that Seine kit is a good summer project to give this plan some legs! And yeah, I LOVE the $ sticker ...clever and poignant!

Big Thanks for the encouragement, guys! I was half-expecting a modest slagging, but fact of the matter is that I've been so fortunate in countless ways --particularly in how my kids live and behave-- that I'd love to share this time with them. As the old commercial went: time spent with the kids ...priceless! For all else, there's credit cards I only wish I had an old beater stick on which to teach them ...I don't even know anyone who owns an genuinely old car let alone one with a manual, hahaha!

I'm fine with them staying in their apt. or mom's basement and playing video games - less traffic
