Gas Mileage for your 911
I am curious about everyones gas mileage in your cars for city and highway. I realize we don't buy/drive these cars for MPG numbers but am curious. I have a '79 SC and am getting 13 in the city and 19 on the highway. In the city I drive farily consistently and conservative. Sure there are the occasional to red line shifts but not excessive. The reason I'm curious is two-fold. First the numbers I get in my SC are identical to my fat pig 4X4 Expedition and secondly, my '87 928 gets the same in the city but gets 24ish on the highway. I figure it is due to gearing as the 928 is loping along at 75 and the SC is cranking along much higher.
I'm considering swithching to PMOs but don't want to drop to 5mpg. Maybe my car is horribly out of tune but it sure runs strong. Just curious. I read a post on the Pelican board by Wayne and he is getting 17 in the city and 27 on the highway in his twin-plugged 2.7. I used to have an '80 SC targa that seemed to do way better but maybe my memory is shot. Inquiring minds want to know (well at least mine).
Thanks,
Geoff

Geoff,
I have high milage '83 SC. I get between 15-17 mph with 80% heavy stop and go and the other 20% moments of high speed aggressive driving when LA traffic warrants. I have a very rich set-up too. I get around 22-24 mph on long Highway trips. I'm not a mechanic, but it sounds like you may need a tune up or have your compression leakage checked. Good Luck.

In stop-and-go L.A. traffic, my '69 911E gets about 12 mpg plus spews the prime pollutants that gave So Cal skies their infamous orangish/brown hue that so many other cities copied years later.

I got 32 mpg with my brother's '83 SC last summer on a road trip where I borrowed his car. Almost all highway driving. His motor and tranny are stock and in very good tune.
I used to get 28 mpg on my '86 911 with mostly highway driving. 22-25 with mixed driving.
I average about 22-25 mpg on my 964 depending on it's use.

Thanks for all the info. I posted on the email list as well and think I need a complete tune-up and have the mixture set. I must be running a little rich. Maybe too, my size 13 is heavier than I think.
