First post here! I've recently purchased a Carrera 3.2 (1988) that I mainly use as spirited driving car.
Though I'm loving it, I am looking to make the exhaust note a bit more ... punchy/raspy (without being obnoxiously loud).
Increasing HP is not the main driver for this change, but I wouldn't mind dropping some weight
I've done a lot of research in the past couple of weeks, but most of topics/advices couldn't really apply in CA smog tests requirements.
Here are the couple options I think I'm left with if I want to improve the exhaust sound (excluding exhaust at every smog test):
1) Get a different muffler, with stock cat.
I've read about mufflers from Monty, M&K, Dansk, Fabspeed. Would all those work with OEM cat? How much sound difference would there be without a cat bypass (all sound/video seem to be with a cat bypass)?
2) Get a different muffler and a CARB approved cat. I haven't read a lot of thoughts on this - is this not worth it?
3) Do you have any other alternative options? (moving out of CA is not one for now ).
Here is a pelican with a stock 1 in, 1 out 3.2 silencer that has the one out welded shut and two center outlets installed. He reported great sound without drone issues.
My M&K one in one out is about half the weight of stock, sounds great at start up, no drone, not loud while cruising and bolts to the stock cat location.
Ive had a few, fabspeed, dansk, oem modified frankenmuffler, m&k
My recommendation m&k with extra baffaling hands down.
Fabspeed is poor quality in general nice folks though
Dansk is nice but m&k is far superior
My car has headers no a.c. or heat and just a dual out. Very loud but sounds amazing the quality is unbelieveable. Not as loud as a kressigg exhaust on a countach but sounds nice
M&k quality is unbeatable , its 321 stainless steel
I also took off 50lbs which is 5 hp gain
I spent less than $100 on this like four years ago. I've always used this series of mufflers on any 6cyl car I've had. They start out very quiet but get plenty loud and a little raspy after a short while. I now run a cat delete (sorry bout y'all in CA) and its PLENTY ROWDY
Thanks - based on reviews and chatting with Brian I'm thinking to go with M&K 1 in 1 (MKM33). Maybe one day I can add their active exhaust system as well.
@Cevan did you perceive a noticeable improvement/increase of the exhaust sound? I'm trying to figure out how much sound change I can expect with stock cat.

Phil from Fabspeed here.
We have some great modifications for the 3.2. Unfortunately, you can't do the cat as of yet (we are working on that). You can do the muffler on it. You can can also add a quick tune on the 3.2 and pick up some great gains.

Agree fabspeed is of poor quality, and customer service nightmare. That said I have their resonated pipe on my 88 and it sounds good. Took a full refab so it would fit properly, so budget double the cost of the price to fix their ****ty work. If you're keeping the cat, try a straight pipe, sounds epic and not as loud and crazy as you might think. Cheers!
If anybody is local in the nyc area and wants a fabspeed cat eliminator for free come pick it up. Pm me
just bipass no exhaust. I'm using it as a weight to hold down a tarp
