You shouldn't have an issue pulling the starter, you just need the correct socket extentions, etc. I just checked with Mayo's and they agree your car shouldn't be difficult....
Oh and here is a picture of the alternator they did....all in the car, working well...
Personally, I replaced my starter like this......
This is a 1970T

^^^ Very nice work. What are the 2 yellow wires? I thought there was just a single yellow to that location (unless MFI?)

I have carbs. That's the way my new wiring harness came....
You can see in the photo, that the HE shouldn't be in the way. I know I had to fiddle with some items once it was in the car, and all was accessible ...

Ah ok very nice.
Well, my car will start intermittent. When it doesn't turn over i get a very strong "click" from the starter. It seems to behave when it's dead cold.
I checked all wiring voltages and draws, plugs, etc, and all are in great condition. So, it's the starter 99.9%
Shop has a new starter from a 72+ sitting there for me, so we'll install that this week.
I'll keep the original and probably get it cleaned up nice for safe keeping.

Finally chased down the fresh air fan light lol. Total contortion move to get that thing out and back in. And fixed ashtray light. If it's on the car it must work, OCD doesn't allow me to have non working things.
Next to chase down defrost and see if I can get that working.
Picked up a synchrometer to measure the airflow on the carbs. I had the main jets up 2 sizes (this was same recommendation for the guy who rebuild the carbs a few years ago), and they tuned them, but said they wanted me to drive it some more. I get a little pop at 2k and on deceleration. Was able to find out why. Balanced the left/right bank, they were near spot on, adjusted idle, and adjusted idle mixture on each cylinder and the airflow. I was able to get them all balanced and I think i got the idle mixtures close :-) It's been 20+ years since I've messed with carbs. Drove it a little and power feels strong, but smoother, still getting an occasional pop. Will drive it again tomorrow and try some more fine tuning. It idles nice at about 1k and revs nice, and drops down steady. So I think I got it almost right.
Of course, once car is hot, it won't restart LOL. So will try in the AM.
Starter replacement appointment on thursday. Also picked up a waterproof bosch relay and will put that on the starter to trigger the solenoid. Not a factory setup...but would rather have a .1a draw to trigger start than whatever the solenoid takes running through the ignition switch.

New starter is in. I wired up a trigger relay w/ a fuse on the starter itself to minimize the load through the ignition/key. There was one on there long ago, there wasn't one now. The solenoid itself is worn, so will probably get the original starter rebuilt to keep.
The later model starter fit with no problems. Quick job. On a lift took shop 30 minutes.

Yes huge difference actually. Car starts up immediately. I really need a lift in my garage...
now just playing around with the carbs. Get a little pop on transition to mains. Idle good power good. Off idle good. Return to idle good. It’s that 2-3 k zone.
Car drives nice. Little cold blooded. Got all them balanced and left right in sync. Need to play with the idle air mix a bit as i guess it affects the transition too.
I like the sound of carbs. I kinda hate carbs though. I now remember why.

Yeah possibly. I’ve got the right idle and main jets for my setup. So just trying to get them balanced best i can. They were fully rebuilt 5 years ago but probably due a full once over, clean, float, accel pump, butterly alignment all that...
my knowledge of these is limited but i do get the concepts. Give me some efi and computers and I’m much more in my comfort zone :-)
