Default 911 sc steering column

How many hours should it take an experienced mechanic to do a complete disassembly of the steering column, change the sleeve (that is the part that usually fails) and the bearing and then reassemble?
Thanks.

for an SC (or any 1974- ) you don't usually need to do that - just buy a repl. part that can be pushed in

Yes. I found this out, unfortunately, after the column was taken out, by a mechanic who was unaware of the cheap easy fix. My question is how long should it take a competent mechanic to disassemble and reassemble the steering column? I'm wondering if the hours charged for this were excessive. Had I spent 20 minutes researching this before I passed the job off I would have saved myself a lot of money. Lesson Learned.

That fix has been known for over 20 years. It wouldn't surprise me if a mechanic that wasn't aware of it also doesn't know what they are doing when taking the steering column apart.

That said, I understand that it is pretty time consuming - that's why the fixes were developed. I'm just not sure what is reasonable.

given the info in this thread sounds like you do not have an experienced mechanic, so hard to say.

Here's a great thread on what is entailed to remove the steering column: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsc...revisited.html

Which includes a link to this thread (start on post #55): http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsc...ml#post1542087

Thanks for the responses.

Does 11 hours labor for the steering column in and out with bearings replaced on a '81 SC seem reasonable, unreasonable or borderline?

unreasonable, tho I've never done it

I worked out how to do it ((older style column on a '73) but was able to take care of my own problem with it in situ). It is not that hard to do; may require a press tho.

4-5 hrs maybe

Nice protection for my 1988 911 stock steering wheel and improved steering grip as well. Pretty easy to install.
