Default shock selection

Looking for input about shock for 1978 911SC. Koni sports have been recommended but my local shop suggests using OEM Boges. The car is used for stret driving only...experience?....opinions?...good supplier?

You will be fine w/ the Boges, or Koni (non-sport, if you stay on the street), or you might consider the Bilsteins (HD for street use), which are long-lasting. Cheers!

If I might make a suggestion,...

Given the labor for installation and most people's expectations of a long life and improved handling, you really cannot go wrong with Bilstein HD's.

Nothing lasts as long and they really ride pretty nicely. Truly, you do get what you pay for,...

On the 'sport ' model SCs in Europe Porsche fitted Bilstein sport shocks I would recommend fitting these.

I must agree with Steve. Bilsteins are a excellent brand. I am a very big fan of them and I have them on my '85 911 as also. Let me know if you have anymore questions. Best wishes - Jay Gratton

I am consdering replacing my Boges (front) and Bilsteins (Rear). I use the car for DE and auto-x, and don't mind a harsh ride on the street. Should I go w/ Bilsteins, Koni's or something else?

I'm looking to get the most competitive car that is still ok for the street.

Steve, your expert opinion is greatly appreciated.

thanks,
Matt

Hi Matt:

Give what you are doing with your car, I would do either:

1) Bilstein Sports, F & R.

or

2) Bilstein custom-valved RSR struts and shocks. These feature raised (19mm) front spindles for more suspension travel on a lowered car, improved front roll center location for less lateral weight transfer, and better pump steer geometry. The rear shocks are about 1.5" shorter for restored travel on a lowered car and have spherical bearings at the bottom of the shock, instead of rubber.

or

3) JRZ single-adjustable struts and shocks. these have the same features as the above, along with 14 adjustments of rebound and I can offset-bore the front spindles for more negative camber.

The decision rests with your budget and how well you want your car to handle.

Please let me know if I can help you with any of this.
