No footrest in my 82 targa?
This is probably a stupid topic but here goes...
Im a new and first time P car owner. After driving around for a few days i realized whats been missing...a footrest!!. I dont know where to rest my foot, my left leg actually falls a sleep sometimes. I kinda have to keep my leg curled up.
Oh and i'm pretty short(5'6")if that makes a difference.
Is there a cure for this?
thanx, leo

welcome to the joys of owning a Targa. I've read that the footwells are narrower due to added strengthening necessary for the lack of roof.
I end up with my left foot back behind the clutch, or up against the left side. wish I did have a dead pedal, but heck, I still have Targa......

Be careful when mounting a dead pedal such as the one sold by AJUSA, which I believe Ralph Boothe manufactures. The mounting hole lines up exactly where a Motronic harness hides behind the carpet on the 84 to 89s, and if you screw into it, you will blow out the computer. I know because I did it but I was fortunate in that I was able to source the Bosch chips from a 944S2 in a wrecking yard and repair mine.

There is definitely added reinforcement in the targas. It was one of the reasons for my buying a coupe. I couldn't fit my foot in the car unless it was depressing the clutch, and in that scenario, I couldn't get the cars to go that fast. Without the reinforcement, the only thing holding a targa together is the floor pan. So they basically welded a cross-brace from the frame to the windshield/door column to add some torsional ridgidity. If you get pissed about it, just think about how stiff the car would be if they hadn't put it in!

Is this lack of space more noticeable in the US/LH drive Targa? I seem to have ample room in my Aussie RH drive SC Targa, for both feet. I reckon a dead pedal would fit?

I'm not familiar with the layout of the RHDs. I don't recall the passenger side footwell (I didn't spend much time in the right-hand seat when looking, and you can't really buy a porsche if your passengers are a priority). I want to say that there might be some more reinforcement on the driver's side (I might well be mistaken) but regardless of my mental ramblings, it stands to reason that if there's enough room for you to move your feet around comfortably, you would be able to put in a dead pedal. Just heed Steve Wong's advice about not drilling through anything on the other side of the bulkhead.
