Default Suspension Pan Rust Repair Video Series

Suspension pan replacement is all too common on these cars because it’s the lowest hollow cavity in the front of the car and the acid battery sitting on top of it doesn’t help the rust situation either.

The extent of the rust damage surprised me as I thought the small 1” hole visibile from underneath might be isolated. My car is a 74 so it wasn’t galvanized at the factory.

This youtube video series shows you all the steps I took to replace the front half of the suspension pan. Several challenges that I overcame, that you might encounter too.

1) DIY removal of old rusted pan.

2) Trim and Align Suspension Points. You should check out this novel spirit level and tram gage technique

3) Weld it in straight

4) Ensure that the hood alignment is still good. It wasn’t on my car, but then again my car has been through a lot

5) You might find other things of interest such as the repair of the stock gas tank support panel, electrolysis rig for de-rusting, simulated spot welds, and several other tips and tricks for a quality outcome.

One thing that's hard to duplicate is the factory spot weld appearance, especially in the hard to reach area of the gas tank support panel. Resistance weld tongs access can be challenging, but then again I don't have a spot welder at all.

This technique in the video wasn't invented by me, but maybe my technique is helpful to someone here???

What do you think? Over-restored or worthwhile?

Default Replaced Suspension Pan now in Epoxy Primer

It feels good to see everything in one color. I shot epoxy primer on the entire trunk area, but I'm really happy with the suspension pan replacement. Its hard to tell that it was replaced.

I decided not to undercoat this area because I like the simple clean look so much. Can't wait to get color on it!

That big lump in the front was added for a front oil cooler. Here's the thread on that:

Default Now all painted

Well, it's now painted at least. I've spent a lot of time repairing and modifying this trunk area, starting with the suspension pan rust repair.
Those hours are worth it when it's all painted smooth. I couldn't bring myself to spray undercoating on it so its its extra slick!
