Default NYC - PPI & Viewing

Hi Guys

I'm getting serious about a P-car in NYC.

Any recommendations for a PPI in or near Manhattan? I talked to Mark @ Formula in Astoria. "$300. But I don't do compression or leakdown because by the time I've checked the car & driven it, I know if there's a problem. If I think that it needs one, you're not going to buy it anyway are you?" Hmmmmmmmmm.

Anybody available for a quick educated look to make sure that it truly has 4 wheels? I can't get there for 2 - 3 weeks. PM me.

Thanks

Ian

Where exactly is the car. I used a shop in Long Island that charged $65 for a visual/drive inspection and another $135 for the compresion/leakdown.

If you tell us the location of the car, us new yorkers can find you someone realatively close.

PS. I'm also looking for a 911, but i promise not to steal yours

Most of these guys say the same thing. No leak down or compression unless they feel it absolutely necessary. I don't think they want to go through the aggravation. Its quite a bit of work. How old is the car and what model. The average price is about $300.00. When you think of it its not much money if it saves you from buying a VW in disguise.

There are two places in NJ about forty minutes from downtown. Sans traffic that is. Try calling Paul at Protosport in Pompton Plains (973) 839-5353. or Powertech in Rockaway (973) 589-3210 If you are looking to save $ you may try Bob at EuroPerf (stable energies) (973) 773-4870 in Garfield.

Any of these guys will do a decent job checking the car out. I wouldn't skimp on a PPI Its a small price to pay for piece of mind.

LOL

Upper east, I believe. But I will find out more today. 88 coupe.

I am searching remotely & will fly in if it passes PPI.

Tommy

85 Red 72K clean in CT. Some track, chipped, records since 94 available. PO asking $18K but he does want to move it.

email me if you want contact info imcarthur@audioplusservices.com

Wrong state for me. CT seemingly will not allow a tax exempt drive out & demand full retail tax on registration. NY is kinder.

Thanks

Ian

Ian,

I will be in NYC tomorrow. I don't know yet how much time I'll have, but I may be able to take a look. What are the details? BTW, if you make the trip, you may want to come out to Long Island to see my '81 SC. Sorry, no pictures yet... I've been busy lately with our new baby daughter, 1 week old today!

Todd

Yes, congrats on the addition to your family. No sleep, right?

It's true, I might be going with an 88 Carrera, but I can't get the address until tomorrow, when I do the last arm wrestle with the PO.

Your SC was mighty tempting, but a 3.2 with a G50 is swaying me.

Tommy and Ian - thanks much.

Ian - Geez, not only a 3.2 but a G50??? Now you're just being a wimp . Let me know when you find out where it is. I'd be happy to take a look if the timing works out.

I beg your mercy.

Yes, it looks like I might wimp out with a big, fat Carrera.

With a 3.2 to push the option-laden lard *** around.

And a G50 for lazy shifting rather than the 'real man's gearbox', the 915.

Will you still answer my PMs?

Ian

BTW It looks like I might stopover in NYC a week next Sunday on my way to Miami for business. If it works, I can view it myself. Thanks guys.

Todd,
Where in LI are you, and what are the details of your 81? PM me.

Ian,
I just spoke to sonny at SM Motorsports in New Hyde Park (about 1/3 hour from NYC). He charges $65 without a compression or leakdown. He told me he will give me a few pages of notes listing every washer that is out of place. He rebuilt the motor on my S2 (just before it was stolen of course) and i was happy with his work, and other from PCA that I autocrossed with were very happy as well. He is considered to be very honest.

Sunny did a PPI for me, too. He was very thorough. He called me after his initial inspection and told me that he didn't recommend the leakdown because he found obvious major oil blow by.

I thought that was cool, because he could have easily just charged me the extra money for the other tests.

Thanks guys.

Well, when all was said & done, I passed on the car.

I was at the top of my budget (well, slightly over) & the car needed front tires & sunroof repair & ac recharge & . . . so I passed. Since I'm importing into Canada, my costs also include duty + 2 levels of taxes which means car price + 19%. So I have revised my budget to $17K.

It was a 2 owner 88 Stone Gray 82K linen interior w/spoilers firm @ $19K.

PM me if anyone wants contact info.

I'm still checking.

So far: NY, TN, AL

All will issue temp permits & no retail tax.

FL 6%
CT 6%

Tax must be paid. CT is just plain rigid & you have to pay. FL will allow shipping out tax free but I got a quote from Intercity for $2500 for covered transport Tampa to Toronto. I'm sure I could get cheaper, but the border doubles the cost.

Bear in mind, that I'm only looking at the eastern half of the country - the part I travel to on business regularly.

Ian
