Default Poor man Singer

Hi everyone!
My name is Marko and I am from Croatia. Like the title says I am planning to build poor man Singer. I have found 1981 911 3.0 SC Targa without engine and transmission. What engine and tranny do you recommend for this car? I would use as weekend car, probably no track use, and maybe some 400-500 km round trips around Croatian coast. I am new at this so if you could point on what things to pay attention.

Thank you for your help

I dont have strictly defined budget. I have mechanic who is good friend so all engine and mechanical work should be almost free. I was thinking around 30-40k $. The car price is not included in that budget.

Was the $40K US Dollars? That's a lot of engine for a 1981 Targa.

The right answer on a budget is ‘unlimited’. Installing an updated powertrain makes it a Hot Rod. A Singer, even a poor man’s Singer demands more, a lot more.

Also, any 36-year-old car that’s come to rest somewhere with its major guts disemboweled is most likely to have many more misplaced and inoperative things. All Porsche things are expensive!

Surely your wife thinks this is an ill-conceived notion, and if she does any independent research the nomenclature ‘requires unlimited budget’ will keep coming up. Not to worry, just send her here, we can convince anybody that this will be a good, sound, and profitable venture.

Been there done that!
First two questions you should ask yourself. How much are you planning to do yourself? What is your timeline? Only then can you set a budget.

It wont be a poor mans Singer, It will be a poor mans backdate wide body.

You should look for a 3.0L SC motor or 3.2 Carrera motor.
915 or G50 gear box.
(you could install a 964 engine and transmission, but that might be more work and up your budget and not help resale).

You can buy the 17" "Singer" wheels from Fiske.
Install 1969-1973 steel front fenders and get the back date fiberglass long hood from Getty.

GTS sell the seats.
Elephant sell the suspension.

930 brakes would suffice.

You can spend upwards of a 100k in a blink.

I can think of better cars to be into for 100k.

That's a 915 tranny tub, not a G-50 tub.

Remember that the guys building wildly modified car have access to to vast hoards of parts. When I wanted 930 brakes on my hot rod it was just a matter of trading with a friend. Someone else may have had to fork over $1,500/caliper. My struts we're also almost no money out of pocket yet almost everyone else on the planet would be out $3,000. Things to think about.

is it much work to convert a 915 tub to a G50?

I would imagine it is. The G-50 is several inches wider. The torsion tubes sit further out so that entire section of the car has to be cut out and rebuilt. I sure wouldn't want to buy a car that went through a pan and tube transplant. Even the forward tranny mounts are different.
