Default 1974-1977 911S's

What is the perception, generally, of the mid '70's 911's? They seem to be the red headed step children. I'm aware of the stud issues, the thermal reactors, the inadequate fans, etc.

Are they overlooked or has their reputation ruined any "comeback"?

I have a 77 with a 3.2. Red headed hot rod. I think they are one of the only decent values left even with prices softening a bit

They're no longer redheaded (and redheads are hot anyway so there's that). They have climbed in price a lot especially 74s due to Cali smog exemption. Good cars in nice colors trade in the 30s.

Not many middies left that have not been sorted I would imagine.
The only real downside on these cars is possible rust.

This brings up a good point. I looked at a '76 that was out of state. I live in California. Would this car even pass a smog here, generally speaking? What would usually be the procedure it getting to pass should it fail if one bought a car like this, assuming everything was stock OEM on the car?

Rumor has it that if your 3,2 was stock with the stock cat you'd be able to get it ok'd.

the middies have made a strong comeback.
They are actually decent cars once sorted out. (head studs etc)
They have good value if you can find really clean examples.

74-77S are fine, but the 78-83SC would be better IMO.

I would not shy away from a good 74-77 however.

Each generation 911 is worth owning.
