hey stranger friends! So i took the dive and just got an 88 3.2. Its got some lame dynomax muffler on it currenlty so i plan on getting either a dansk or mand k muffler. Do u all know the sound difference between the different sizes of the dansk mufflers??

Can't comment on comparisons but I just put a Dansk sport muffler one in one out on my 87 3.2 coupe. I also have a cat bypass. So beautiful, love it, time to delete the radio. And the stainless steel tail pipe is a work of art.

I have a Dansk Sport 2 in 1 out and SSI's. Great sound and nice performance bump (from SSI's) and weight savings. Highly recommend this setup. Only downside is emissions testing in CA

Best sounding car I own bar none is my 914-6, 2.7 mag case with webers, headers, and 2 in 2 out exhaust. Nothing sounds quite like a mag case car with webers!

So i'm unfortunately in CA so I will most likely need to get some type of CA legal cat to go with a Dansk Sport muffler. I've seen lots of posts on here that the Dansks are a great product for the money.

Any suggestions on the cats? i would love to go the route of the SSIs and the muffler BUT i doubt that would fly in Cali unless someone has some info i don't know about.

only specific thing I recall re development (besides killing the horrid CIS) is that PAG wanted to ensure better emissions and fuel economy with each hp or torque increment - 3.2L had slightly less torque IIRC

re sound:
think of 3 routes
1. exhaust noise
2. induction noise
3. noise transmitted thru the engine case (or maybe to the tranny too) - this will esp. include the timing chains and an air-cooled motor will have more of this transmitted than a water-cooled one

then there is fan noise

I have had both. In fact, I have both today. My last air cooled 911 was a turbo, and it had a very distinctive sound, since I technically had no muffler. The turbo was the muffler. The sound of the air being sucked into the intake of that car, and the turbo spooling up, were very distinctive.

Sadly, when the 996 Porsche, the first watercooled 911 to reach big production numbers, was designed with little regard for sound. They learned how important that was to the customer so they quickly began a program to develop the sport exhaust. The OEM Sport exhaust on my 997S was tuned specifically for my cabriolet, by Porsche. They recognized the importance, finally, of sound to the owner. I specifically avoided a water cooled turbo Porsche because I felt that they were too muffled. Nothing matched my 1981 turbo, but my 2006 with PSE has its own special sound which makes it a winner. So much so that one day, not long after I got the car, I had a gentleman in a Carrera GT in the lane to my right saying across cars, "nice exhaust."

I just recently got a hold of the 1988 911 3.2 with stock engine, a straight cat bypass and then some janky aftermarket cheapo exhaust that I could NOT for the life of me figure out what brand it was. I think it was some "Dynomax" exhaust that made the car rumble and sound more like a muscle car. It compltely covered up the engine sounds. I was very disappointed with the sound and thought the 996 c4s PSE car I had sounded MUCH MUCH better. The 996 PSE had a nice little purr to it and small burbles.
That said, I'm hopeful that the crappy sound in my 3.2 had more to do with the boomy obnoxious cheapo muffler the PO had on it. It DID have nice kick back pops and crackles on throttle lift off which i liked but the overall sound was NOT Porsche like whatsoever.
It's currently at Pacific Power Motorports getting a stock cat fitted along with a Dansk Sport 70mm muffler. I'm hopeful this combo will give me that nice air cooled 911 sound everyone raves about!!!

Yesterday, I took Olympus LS-10 sound recorder from work and taped it on the rear bumper and did some test recording.. Pretty good already. I have to do it again with more time and completely warm engine on some quiet back roads and take her to red line. ..and maybe also in tunnel.


The car is stock 911SC 1982 RoW (204hp) with Dansk pre-74 style stainless steel sport exhaust.
